Brick NJ Hit & Run Charges

Brick Police were able to track down the suspect in a serious hit and run accident that took place earlier in the week, by using EZ-Pass toll records and surveillance video. The defendant, a Bayville man, was charged with critically-injuring another man in a Monday rush-hour and then fleeing the scene, according to police.

Police had surveillance video of the Lanes Mill Road incident, which happened around 5:30 pm in midst of heavy traffic, police said. The car that struck the victim slowed down, then took off south down the road, police said. With the help of the video, detectives were able to  determine that the fleeing car was a sedan and were able to make out three letters on the license plate. Authorities then used the information obtained from the video to cross reference EZ-Pass toll records to narrow down the search.

After the defendant was arrested and questioned, police determined that he was in the process of trying to have the vehicle repaired at an auto-body shop in the northern New Jersey. The Ocean County Sheriff’s Criminal Investigation Unit went to that shop, and seized the car as evidence, the sergeant added.

At this time the defendant has been charged with knowingly leaving a motor vehicle accident with serious bodily injury, tampering with physical evidence, and hindering apprehension, according to reports. It is also common to see defendants with these sets of facts to be later charged or indicted for Assault by Auto, a form of Aggravated Assault. Bail was set by a judge at $50,000 with no 10-percent cash option, police said. These charges are typically indictable and will most likely be sent up to the Ocean County Superior Court and handled by the County Prosecutors Office.
