Parking & Arrival

The court shares 210 Chestnut Street with the Roselle Police Department. Confirm the court entrance and posted parking rules before visiting.

When to arrive: Allow approximately 20–30 minutes before any required in-person appearance for parking, security and check-in. This is practical planning advice, not a court-mandated arrival time.

Roselle Criminal Defense Lawyer

Roselle packs its entire court calendar into two days, so each session carries a full list and there is little slack if you miss one. Even a first disorderly persons charge can mean a criminal record and possible jail, and motor vehicle convictions add points, surcharges and possible suspensions. Our firm takes Roselle cases and handles matters in courts across Union County.

Why Roselle Clients Call Us

  • A two-day week. Roselle sits only on Mondays and Tuesdays. A postponement here typically means waiting for the next open Monday or Tuesday listing, so we push to make each date count.
  • Monday evening court. The 5:00 p.m. Monday session and Monday office hours until 7:00 p.m. help working clients, which makes it easier to keep a court date without missing a shift.
  • Virtual and in-person tracks. Roselle runs hybrid sessions and offers a Roselle Virtual Municipal Court for tickets that can’t be resolved online. We help you decide which route fits your case.
  • Out-of-town drivers. Route 27, Roselle’s main highway, runs along the Linden line, and a driver ticketed there may live far from the borough. On eligible traffic matters we can appear so you don’t have to keep coming back.

Roselle’s Monday-and-Tuesday Court Week

Roselle concentrates its sessions and its longest office hours at the start of the week, which shapes how you should plan.

  • Sessions: two on Monday (11:00 in the morning and 5:00 in the evening) and one on Tuesday at 11:00. The borough describes them as “Virtual & In-Person sessions.”
  • Office hours are uneven across the week: Monday 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.; Tuesday 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; Wednesday and Thursday from 9:00 until 4:00; Friday only until 12:30 p.m.
  • Contact: phone 908-245-5588, fax 908-241-0104. The court page lists unnroselleboro.mbx@njcourts.gov as its email. The borough’s resource guide gives rosellecourt@boroughofroselle.com instead, and the NJ Judiciary directory uses a slightly different address, so phoning is the safest way to confirm.
  • Staff: Judge Carl L. Marshall and Court Administrator Nicole Bailey, C.M.C.A. Roselle’s court code is 2014.

Court and Police at 210 Chestnut Street

The Roselle Police Department and the municipal court share 210 Chestnut Street. If you’re attending in person, look for the court entrance and follow the posted parking rules rather than heading into the police lobby. Sharing a building also means the officer who wrote your ticket may be nearby on your court date. Be polite, but leave any discussion of the facts to your attorney.

Source: New Jersey Judiciary, Municipal Court Statistics, July 2025–June 2026, PDF page 523. Figures above combine the report’s criminal columns (indictable, disorderly/petty disorderly and 246 other criminal complaints), DWI and moving violations, and leave out 9,365 parking tickets. Including parking, the court recorded 17,460 total filings. Figures are reported by court, not by arresting agency or the defendant’s town of residence. A clearance rate above 100% means more cases were resolved than newly filed during the period; it is not a conviction rate. These figures are a reporting-period snapshot, not live court data.

What Roselle’s Court Numbers Mean

Roselle Municipal Court saw 8,095 criminal and traffic filings in the year running July 2025 through June 2026, roughly 9% more than 7,460 a year earlier, Judiciary data show. Indictable complaints fell sharply, to 241 from 427; when they are not downgraded, those charges are decided in Superior Court. Complaints at the disorderly and petty disorderly persons grade rose to 716 from 619. DWI filings moved from 85 to 89. Moving violations were 6,803, about 84% of the total.

The court closed 7,301 cases, a 90% clearance rate, which means roughly one in ten new matters was left over and added to the pile. In June 2026 Roselle reported a backlog of 1,233 and 2,126 active pending cases. With all sessions packed into Monday and Tuesday, that carryover lands on a compact court week. Roselle’s 9,365 parking tickets do not count toward any of these figures. Volume statistics describe the court, not the merits or likely result of your case.

2

Summons or Complaint Number

This number identifies the individual summons or complaint. It may be needed when communicating with the municipal court or reviewing court records.

3

Complainant or Issuing Officer

The summons may identify the police officer or other complainant who issued or signed the charge, along with the involved police agency.

4

5

Court Date and Time

Your summons may contain an initial appearance date. A later notice from the court can change that date or the manner in which the appearance will occur.

6

Where to Appear

Review the court location and appearance instructions carefully. Some proceedings may be conducted in person while others may be scheduled remotely.

Important: Your actual summons and any later notice from Roselle Municipal Court control your appearance date, time, location and whether the proceeding is scheduled in person or remotely. If a later court notice differs from the information originally printed on the summons, follow the current court notice or confirm the information directly with the court.

Hybrid Hearings in Roselle

Roselle hears cases both virtually and in person, and it has added online options that can resolve some tickets with no appearance at all.

  • Online Municipal Case Resolution. A notice on the court page, posted around July 2025, announces that eligible cases can be resolved online with “No Court Appearance Required” through NJMCdirect.
  • Roselle Virtual Municipal Court. If your ticket isn’t eligible for online resolution, the borough says you may ask to be heard in its virtual court instead of coming to Chestnut Street.
  • Check your notice for the session. The Monday morning, Monday evening and Tuesday morning listings each run on a separate calendar.
  • Ask early about accommodations. If you need an interpreter or another accommodation, raise it with the court well before your listing.

What Cases Does Roselle Municipal Court Handle?

Motor vehicle tickets and lower-level criminal complaints make up most of this docket. Representative charges:

Criminal and Disorderly Persons Offenses

  • Fighting, tumultuous behavior or offensive language in public, N.J.S.A. 2C:33-2, charged as disorderly conduct
  • Physical altercations without serious injury, N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1(a), known in court as assault
  • Store-theft accusations from borough retailers, N.J.S.A. 2C:20-11, booked as shoplifting
  • Unwanted messages, calls or contact, N.J.S.A. 2C:33-4, filed as harassment
  • Pipes, bags or other drug-use items, N.J.S.A. 2C:36-2, usually called paraphernalia
  • Refusing to leave property after a warning, N.J.S.A. 2C:18-3(b), a charge of trespass

DWI and Traffic Offenses

  • Intoxicated or drugged operation in the borough, N.J.S.A. 39:4-50, typically written as Roselle DWI
  • Driving that endangers people or property, N.J.S.A. 39:4-97, prosecuted as careless driving
  • No proof of a valid auto policy on the car, N.J.S.A. 39:6B-2, known as driving without insurance
  • Declining to blow into the Alcotest machine, N.J.S.A. 39:4-50.4a, filed as refusal
  • Operating while your privileges are suspended by the MVC, N.J.S.A. 39:3-40, called driving while suspended
  • Leaving a crash without stopping, N.J.S.A. 39:4-129, a count of leaving the scene

Route 27, which follows Roselle’s southeastern edge with Linden, is the most significant highway in the borough. Local streets, the commercial areas and the roads around Warinanco Park on the Elizabeth border make up the rest of the map.

Paying or Contesting a Roselle Ticket

The borough directs drivers to pay online through the NJMCdirect portal, and the same system lets eligible drivers dispute a ticket online.

  • Online payment runs through NJMCdirect. For other payment methods, call the court at 908-245-5588 during office hours.
  • Online dispute is available for eligible tickets through the Online Municipal Case Resolution program, with no court appearance required.
  • Some tickets can’t be paid at all. If your summons requires an appearance, you’ll need to come to court or use the virtual court.
  • Once you pay, you’ve pleaded guilty. Points and surcharges attach to your MVC abstract right away, so get advice before paying anything beyond a minor, no-point ticket.
  • Income-based help: if you can’t afford counsel, ask the Roselle court how to apply for the municipal public defender.

Preparing for Your Court Date

  • Know your session. Roselle has three distinct listings each week; showing up Monday morning for a Monday evening case wastes a day.
  • Use Monday hours wisely. The office stays open until 7:00 p.m. on Mondays, the best time to resolve paperwork questions in person.
  • Avoid Friday afternoon surprises. The office closes at 12:30 p.m. on Fridays, so don’t count on reaching a clerk late in the week.
  • Organize your documents such as your ticket, license, registration, insurance card and any repair receipts.
  • Talk to the prosecutor only through counsel so nothing you say is used against you at trial.

When a Roselle Charge Leaves Municipal Court

Burglary, aggravated assault, drug distribution, theft above $200 and other indictable offenses may begin with a complaint signed at Chestnut Street, yet they are prosecuted by Union County’s county prosecutor in Superior Court, which sits in Elizabeth, Roselle’s eastern neighbor. If the prosecutor downgrades the charge, it can return to Roselle Municipal Court as a disorderly persons offense. A clean record can open the door to PTI or another diversion option that ends in dismissal.

Nearby Courts

Four municipalities ring the borough: Roselle Park to the north, Elizabeth, Linden and Cranford. A ticket written just over the line goes to that town’s court, not to Chestnut Street, so double-check which municipality appears at the top of your summons. The borough posts notices and contacts on its court department page.
