Parking & Arrival
The Municipal Court is at 355 North Avenue. This a downtown location so you will have to find street parking. Prospect Avenue between the court and the police parking lot is free parking. Once that fills up you will have to park on North Avenue, which is metered parking. The Borough lists the Dunellen Parking Authority at 732-968-3663 for parking questions.
When to arrive: Allow approximately 20–30 minutes before any required in-person appearance for parking, security and check-in. This is practical planning advice, not a court-mandated arrival time.

Why Dunellen Clients Call Us
- Local focus. We handle criminal and traffic cases across Middlesex County, and our Edison office is a short drive from Dunellen.
- Fast answers. Dunellen requires not-guilty pleas at least seven days before the court date, so you need advice quickly. You talk with an attorney directly, not a call center.
- We start early. The best defenses are often built before the first court date — reviewing police reports, body-cam and dash-cam video, and Alcotest data while evidence is still available.
- No conviction. We prioritize dismissals. When the facts support it, we pursue outcomes that keep your record clean, such as a dismissal, downgrade to a municipal ordinance, or a conditional dismissal.

Understanding Your Dunellen Municipal Court Summons
A Dunellen summons contains important information about the alleged offense including, the statute charged, the person or officer who issued the complaint, the location of court and when you are required to appear. The numbered areas below identify information worth carefully reviewing.
Key Information to Check
Court and Court Code
This identifies the municipality and court associated with the summons. For a case arising in Dunellen, look carefully at the court information printed on your paperwork.
Summons or Complaint Number
This number identifies the individual summons or complaint. It may be needed when communicating with the municipal court or reviewing court records.
Complainant or Issuing Officer
The summons may identify the police officer or other complainant who issued or signed the charge, along with the involved police agency.
Date, Time and Location
These fields identify when and where the alleged offense occurred. They can also help identify potentially relevant police reports, video or other evidence.
Court Date and Time
Your summons may contain an initial appearance date. A later notice from the court can change that date or the manner in which the appearance will occur.
Where to Appear
Review the court location and appearance instructions carefully. Some proceedings may be conducted in person while others may be scheduled remotely.

What to Expect at Dunellen Municipal Court
Inside the front door of Town Hall, a narrow hallway leads to a staircase. At the bottom of the stairs, next to the door to the police station, an officer screens everyone with a hand wand and a bowl for your belongings.
Once cleared, go up to a small landing at the top of the stairs. The court window, where you check in, is on your left, and the courtroom door is on your right. The courtroom is small with limited seating, and because Dunellen is a busy court, the seats often run out and people stand. The landing can get crowded too, as people leave the courtroom and line up to pay fines.
The municipal prosecutor meets with attorneys and people representing themselves one at a time, in an office on the left side of the courtroom toward the front, up by the judge’s bench. With a lawyer, that conversation is handled for you by someone who has already reviewed the evidence and knows what to ask for.
Charges Heard in Dunellen Municipal Court
Dunellen has no interstate or U.S. highway, so its motor vehicle cases come from stops on North Avenue (Route 28), County Route 529 and the streets around the Raritan Valley Line station: driving while intoxicated (DWI), breath-test refusal, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, driving while suspended and driving without insurance. The criminal charges we see include simple assault, disorderly conduct, harassment, resisting arrest, criminal mischief, shoplifting, drug possession, drug paraphernalia and credit card fraud.
When a Dunellen Charge Goes to New Brunswick
An indictable charge, such as aggravated assault, burglary, theft over $200 or possession of most controlled substances, begins with a complaint at Town Hall on North Avenue but is sent to the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office in Superior Court in New Brunswick. If it’s downgraded, it returns to Dunellen’s Tuesday calendar. Our Middlesex County criminal defense page covers penalty ranges and programs, such as conditional dismissal and PTI, that can keep a conviction off your record.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I check in at Dunellen Municipal Court?
At the court window on the landing at the top of the stairs, on your left. You pass through security with an officer at the bottom of the stairs first.
Is there enough seating at Dunellen Municipal Court?
Not always. The courtroom is small and Dunellen is a busy court, so people sometimes have to stand until seats open up.
Do I need a lawyer for a disorderly persons charge in Dunellen?
A disorderly persons conviction is a criminal record in New Jersey and can carry jail time. A lawyer can often find weaknesses in the case or get you into a program like conditional dismissal that avoids a conviction.
Can I avoid a record for a first offense?
Often, yes. First-time offenders may qualify for conditional dismissal (municipal court), conditional discharge (drug offenses), or PTI (Superior Court). Each has eligibility rules, and admission isn’t automatic.
Can a Dunellen conviction be expunged?
In many cases, yes. The petition is filed in Superior Court in New Brunswick, not in Dunellen, and the waiting period depends on the outcome: a dismissed charge can usually be expunged soon after the dismissal, while a disorderly persons conviction generally requires five years. See our Middlesex County expungement page.
Is marijuana possession still a crime in Dunellen?
Adults 21 and older can legally possess up to six ounces of cannabis in New Jersey, so simple marijuana possession isn’t charged in Dunellen. Possession of other drugs, distribution and driving under the influence of cannabis are still prosecuted.
Do you handle cases in nearby towns?
Yes. We handle cases throughout Middlesex County, including Piscataway, Middlesex Borough, South Plainfield, Edison, and New Brunswick.
