Helmetta Municipal Court – What To Know
Reviewed by William A. Proetta, Esq. · Updated
Helmetta Municipal Court is one of the smallest courts in Middlesex County. It meets once a month, on the second Tuesday at 5:00 p.m., at 51 Main Street, and the court office is open only on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The court hears disorderly persons offenses, traffic tickets, DWI charges and borough ordinance violations; indictable charges go to Middlesex County Superior Court in New Brunswick. Helmetta has no police department of its own: Jamesburg officers patrol the borough under a shared-services agreement, so police reports and video come from Jamesburg. Our Edison office is about 25 minutes away. Call (732) 659-9600 any time. Se habla español.

Parking & Arrival
Helmetta Municipal Court is located at 51 Main Street in the Borough municipal building. Follow posted visitor-parking and entrance signs and allow extra time before an in-person appearance.
When to arrive: Allow approximately 20–30 minutes before any required in-person appearance for parking, security and check-in. This is practical planning advice, not a court-mandated arrival time.
The Borough advises that only authorized court staff may process violation payments.

Court Performance
Why Helmetta’s Once-a-Month Schedule Matters
Because the court sits only once a month, every adjournment moves a case back about four weeks, not one. A missed date, a missing discovery item or a scheduling conflict can stretch a simple case over several months, so it pays to have discovery requested and plea discussions under way before your court date, not on it.
The court office keeps short hours, two days a week, so plan calls and paperwork around Tuesday and Thursday mornings. The borough also publishes virtual court information, and your notice tells you whether your date is in person or virtual. Helmetta’s judge, Edward H. Herman, also presides in Spotswood.
What Helmetta’s Court Numbers Mean
From July 2025 through June 2026, the New Jersey Judiciary reported 466 filings in Helmetta Municipal Court, up about 15% from the year before. Most were moving violations (382), with 83 criminal filings and a single DWI. The court resolved 358 matters, a 77% clearance rate, which means fewer cases were resolved than came in, and 100 cases were pending at the end of the year. For a court that meets twelve times a year, that is roughly eight pending cases for every session.
Charges Heard in Helmetta Municipal Court
Helmetta covers less than a square mile and has about 2,500 residents, so its docket is small, and much of it starts with Jamesburg officers patrolling Main Street (County Route 615) between Spotswood and Monroe. The motor vehicle charges we defend there include driving while intoxicated (DWI), driving while suspended, driving without insurance and leaving the scene of an accident. The criminal complaints include simple assault, disorderly conduct, harassment, theft, trespassing, resisting arrest and drug possession.
When a Helmetta Charge Goes to Superior Court
An indictable charge, such as aggravated assault, burglary, theft over $200 or possession of most controlled substances, doesn’t wait for Helmetta’s monthly session. It goes to the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office in Superior Court in New Brunswick, which sits every weekday. If it’s downgraded, it returns to Helmetta’s second-Tuesday calendar. Our Middlesex County criminal defense page explains penalties, conditional dismissal and PTI.
