Secaucus Municipal CourtSecaucus Municipal Court is on the first floor of Town Hall at 1203 Paterson Plank Road, the same building as the Secaucus Police Department. It handles disorderly persons and petty disorderly persons offenses, traffic tickets, DWI charges and town ordinance violations from a Meadowlands town crossed by the Turnpike’s Eastern Spur, Route 3 and Secaucus Junction. Indictable crimes go to Hudson County Superior Court in Jersey City. Start with three things on your paperwork: the exact charge, the court named and your next required step.

Secaucus Criminal Defense Lawyer

William Proetta Criminal Law defends people charged in Secaucus, from Harmon Meadow and Mill Creek Mall to the Turnpike interchanges at 16E and 15X, and throughout Hudson County. Our Jersey City office is about 15 minutes from Secaucus Town Hall.

  • Direct attorney contact. Many people charged in Secaucus don’t live there: they were commuting, shopping or staying at a Harmon Meadow hotel. You talk with your lawyer directly by phone or video, not with a call center.
  • We start early. We request Secaucus Police or State Police reports, body-worn and dash-cam video, store surveillance from the Route 3 shopping centers and Alcotest data while it still exists.
  • Record and license protection first. For commuters and out-of-state drivers, a guilty plea here can follow your license home. When the facts support it, we pursue dismissals, downgrades and diversion programs.

Source: New Jersey Judiciary, Municipal Court Statistics, July 2025–June 2026, PDF page 259. Figures are reported by court, not necessarily by the arresting police agency or a defendant's town of residence. Total filings include parking tickets. Criminal filings use the report’s Criminal Total column. A clearance rate above 100% means more cases were resolved than newly filed during the period; it is not a conviction rate. These figures are a reporting-period snapshot, not live court data.

What Secaucus’s Court Numbers Mean

From July 2025 through June 2026, the New Jersey Judiciary reported 23,120 filings in Secaucus Municipal Court, up about 13% from 20,525. Most of that growth came from parking:

  • Parking filings rose about 21% (10,872 to 13,111), accounting for about 86% of the overall increase. Parking is now about 57% of all filings.
  • Moving violations are about a third of the total.
  • Criminal filings rose about 2% (2,199 to 2,239).
  • DWI filings dipped (83 to 79).

The growth came from parking enforcement; arrests and DWI cases barely moved. The criminal count also includes indictable complaints that start in Secaucus and move to Superior Court, and the totals include tickets from agencies other than the Secaucus police, such as the State Police on the Turnpike. These figures measure the court’s workload, not unique defendants or Secaucus residents.

The 96% clearance rate means the court resolved slightly fewer matters than were newly filed. It’s not a conviction or dismissal rate and doesn’t predict how long any case will take.

What to Expect at Secaucus Municipal Court

When you walk into the court, the violations window is directly on your left. The court usually posts that day’s calendar in the hallway, listing every matter by name with an assigned number. Find your number before you go through security, because you will need it to check in.

Inside the courtroom, a court administrator or officer at the front of the room checks you in by number and pulls your file for the prosecutor. The prosecutor usually meets with attorneys and defendants in the courtroom, at a vestibule at the front to the right of the judge. Sometimes the prosecutor speaks with people representing themselves outside the courtroom in the waiting area, or uses a small office outside the courtroom to the right. A lawyer handles that conversation for you, already knowing the evidence.

Criminal Complaints and the Court That Handles Them

A single Secaucus incident, such as a dispute at a Harmon Meadow hotel or a stop on Route 3, can produce several complaints that end up in different courts. Check the statute, subsection and grading on each one, and track its complaint number, court and next date separately. An update on one complaint doesn’t change the others.

Heard in Secaucus Municipal Court

Disorderly persons charges stay in Secaucus Municipal Court. The ones we defend most often here are simple assault (N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1(a)), harassment (N.J.S.A. 2C:33-4), disorderly conduct (N.J.S.A. 2C:33-2), shoplifting and theft under $200 (N.J.S.A. 2C:20-11 and 2C:20-3), criminal mischief (N.J.S.A. 2C:17-3, indictable when the damage is higher) and drug paraphernalia (N.J.S.A. 2C:36-2).

Sent to Hudson County Superior Court

Indictable charges leave Secaucus for Jersey City. These include drug possession of most controlled substances (N.J.S.A. 2C:35-10), aggravated assault (N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1(b)), robbery (N.J.S.A. 2C:15-1) and theft by deception over $200 (N.J.S.A. 2C:20-4), including retail fraud cases from the town’s shopping centers.

Shoplifting in Secaucus

Secaucus has an unusual amount of retail for its size: Mill Creek Mall, The Plaza at Harmon Meadow, Harmon Cove Outlet Center and the outlet stores in the southwest corner of town. Shoplifting under $200 is a disorderly persons offense heard here, and even a first conviction carries mandatory community service; higher values are indictable. A store’s civil demand letter is a separate claim and doesn’t resolve the criminal case.

Preserve the Evidence

For a disputed incident, save original messages, photos, recordings, and receipts or transaction records. Write down witness names, and separate what each person saw from what they learned afterward. A short description in a complaint rarely captures the whole sequence of events, and store or building video is often overwritten within days.

When a Secaucus Case Goes to Superior Court

If your paperwork lists an indictable charge, the case is prosecuted by the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Hudson County Superior Court. Check the county court notice and any release conditions, and don’t apply the Secaucus municipal court schedule to it.

A lawyer reviews the elements of the charge, the evidence, procedural issues, and options like a pre-indictment resolution or diversion. Eligibility depends on the offense and your history. A charge isn’t automatically downgraded because it’s a first offense, or because someone else’s case went back to municipal court.

Keep county court paperwork separate from local tickets or complaints from the same incident, and track every court date until each case is resolved or reassigned.

Traffic Tickets and DWI in Secaucus

With Route 3, the New Jersey Turnpike, and Secaucus Junction running through town, Secaucus Municipal Court sees heavy traffic volume, and not every ticket comes from the Secaucus police.

  • Payable tickets. A Secaucus ticket that doesn’t say “court appearance required” can usually be paid on NJMCdirect or at the violations window before it closes at 3:45 p.m. Paying is a guilty plea, and points, MVC surcharges and insurance increases follow.
  • Plea by mail and online resolution. Secaucus offers a plea-by-mail form, and some matters can be resolved online through NJMCdirect, including asking the prosecutor to review the ticket. Check eligibility for each ticket. An online option for one ticket doesn’t mean every related charge qualifies.
  • Want to contest it? Ask for a hearing before you pay; once you pay, the guilty plea is entered.
  • Appearance required. DWI, refusal and tickets marked “court appearance required” must be heard by the judge, in person at Town Hall or on Zoom as your notice directs.

The traffic charges we defend most often in Secaucus, from Route 3, the Eastern Spur, Paterson Plank Road and County Avenue, are DWI (N.J.S.A. 39:4-50), refusal to submit to a breath test (N.J.S.A. 39:4-50.4a), driving while suspended (N.J.S.A. 39:3-40), leaving the scene of an accident (N.J.S.A. 39:4-129) and driving without insurance (N.J.S.A. 39:6B-2).

2

Summons or Complaint Number

This number identifies the individual summons or complaint. It may be needed when communicating with the municipal court or reviewing court records.

3

Complainant or Issuing Officer

The summons may identify the police officer or other complainant who issued or signed the charge, along with the involved police agency.

4

Date, Time and Location

5

Court Date and Time

Important: Your actual summons and any later notice from Secaucus Municipal Court control your appearance date, time, location and whether the proceeding is scheduled in person or remotely. If a later court notice differs from the information originally printed on the summons, follow the current court notice or confirm the information directly with the court.

Keep the original summons with every later notice, and use the right complaint or ticket number when you contact the court. If a new notice conflicts with earlier paperwork, sort it out with the court before relying on the old date.

Adjournment and Virtual Court Requests

Secaucus’s court page has two separate forms: a Request for Adjournment and a Virtual Court Request. Use the right one and list the case number.

  • A request isn’t approval. You still have to appear on your original date and in the original format until the court confirms the change.
  • Keep a copy of your request and any response.
  • No answer yet? If your date is close and you haven’t heard back, call the court for instructions. Don’t assume the request was granted.

Preparing for Your Court Date

  • In person: Allow time to reach Town Hall at 1203 Paterson Plank Road, find the first-floor courtroom, and check in. Read posted parking signs; don’t assume free visitor parking.
  • Virtual (Zoom): Follow the instructions for your assigned session and test your connection first. Secaucus requires you to stay muted until called, not eat or smoke during the session, and appear from one stationary location; never from a moving vehicle. Recording is prohibited without the court’s prior written approval.
  • Watch the Opening Statement in English or Spanish on the town’s court page. Secaucus recommends it before your date, since it explains your rights.
  • Access or language needs: Raise interpreter, accessibility, or connection issues with the court in advance.
  • On Zoom, stay in one place and stay muted until called. Secaucus doesn’t allow appearances from a moving vehicle or recording without written approval. And don’t discuss your case with the prosecutor or officer without a lawyer.

Avoiding a Conviction in Secaucus

A Secaucus case doesn’t have to end in a conviction. Depending on the charge and your record, it may be dismissed, downgraded to a town ordinance, or resolved through conditional dismissal, conditional discharge or PTI. Our Hudson County page explains each program and who qualifies, along with which court hears which charges.

Nearby Courts

Within Hudson County, Secaucus borders North Bergen, Jersey City and Kearny, with several Bergen County towns across the Hackensack River. We handle cases in all three Hudson courts. For official forms and notices, see the town’s court page.
