Parking & Arrival

Court is in Borough Hall, 420 East Main Street (U.S. Route 9). From Garden State Parkway Exit 58, take Route 539 south about 3.3 miles to the Route 9 light, turn left; Borough Hall is about 1.1 miles on the right.

When to arrive: Allow approximately 20–30 minutes before any required in-person appearance for parking, security and check-in. This is practical planning advice, not a court-mandated arrival time.

Borough main number: 609-296-2701. Sessions are recorded for transcripts. Fines are expected in full at in-person court, or you may request a Time Payment. Public defender applications are made at the court window; if approved, a $200 fee is usually due before your court appearance.

Tuckerton Criminal Defense Lawyer

Although the borough is small, East Main Street doubles as U.S. Route 9, and the borough draws Seaport visitors and a large crowd for its September decoy show. A conviction for a disorderly persons offense can bring jail time and a lasting record, and a DWI conviction can cost you your license and raise your insurance. Our Ocean County criminal lawyers handle Tuckerton matters before Judge Maestrey and, when needed, in Superior Court.

Why Tuckerton Clients Call Us

  • Only one court day a month. Tuckerton sits on a single Thursday each month, so a missed date or a postponement can push your case back several weeks.
  • You cannot switch formats on the day. If your notice puts you in person, you will not be admitted to the virtual session, and in-person defendants wait until the Zoom blocks are finished.
  • Disorderly persons filings rose sharply. The state counted 192 disorderly persons complaints in Tuckerton for the court year ending June 2026, compared with 112 the year before, an increase of about 71%.
  • A backlog worth planning around. Of the 619 Tuckerton cases pending at the end of June 2026, 435 were listed as backlog, a larger share than in the Little Egg Harbor court next door (486 of 816).

Tuckerton’s Third-Thursday Schedule

Tuckerton’s court day is the third Thursday of each month. Each court day is split into four blocks:

  • 9:00 a.m. — virtual session
  • 10:30 a.m. — virtual session
  • 11:30 a.m. — in-person session
  • 12:30 p.m. — in-person session

The borough sets each year’s court days in advance, and they follow that third-Thursday rule. Your notice tells you which block you are assigned to, and that assignment is the one the court will follow.

Getting To Tuckerton Borough Hall

Here is how to drive there. From the Garden State Parkway, take Exit 58 and follow Route 539 south about 3.3 miles to the third traffic light, where Route 539 meets Route 9 and East Main Street. Turn left; Borough Hall is roughly 1.1 miles ahead on the right. Coming from the west on Route 539, cross over the Parkway, continue to the Route 9 light and turn left there. The court office is staffed on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Source: New Jersey Judiciary, Municipal Court Statistics, July 2025–June 2026, PDF page 451. Figures above combine the report’s criminal columns (indictable, disorderly/petty disorderly and 50 other criminal complaints), DWI and moving violations, and leave out 17 parking tickets. Including parking, the court recorded 1,515 total filings. Figures are reported by court, not by arresting agency or the defendant’s town of residence. A clearance rate above 100% means more cases were resolved than newly filed during the period; it is not a conviction rate. These figures are a reporting-period snapshot, not live court data.

What Tuckerton’s Court Numbers Mean

Filings in Tuckerton grew modestly last year. Statistics published by the NJ Judiciary for July 2025–June 2026 show 1,515 filings, compared with 1,421 the previous year, a rise of about 6.6%. Moving violations made up 1,190, about 79% of the total. Criminal filings came to 278, and the number of indictable complaints first filed in Tuckerton actually fell, to 36 from 61. DWI filings rose to 30 from 24.

The court disposed of 1,404 matters, a 93% clearance rate, so new cases came in a little faster than old ones were closed. That gap shows up in the backlog: 435 cases were in backlog and 619 were pending as of June 30, 2026. Because Tuckerton is a small court, these totals can swing noticeably from year to year, and none of them predicts how a particular defendant’s case will be decided.

How Virtual And In-Person Court Work In Tuckerton

Tuckerton runs its Zoom blocks first and its courtroom blocks second, and each format has its own rules.

  • View the opening remarks first. A video of the court’s opening statement is available in both English and Spanish; view it before your hearing.
  • Use the link for your date. Register through the Zoom link the borough posts for your court day. The link only works on the correct date and at the correct time.
  • Sign in with your full name and keep your microphone muted until you are called.
  • Prosecutor first, then the judge. You speak with the prosecutor before your case goes before Judge Maestrey.
  • Sessions are recorded. The court records its sessions so a transcript can be made.
  • In-person defendants wait their turn. If you are assigned to the 11:30 a.m. or 12:30 p.m. block, you are admitted to the courtroom only once the virtual court has ended.

What Cases Does Tuckerton Municipal Court Handle?

Cases in Tuckerton’s court are limited to non-indictable matters: petty disorderly and disorderly persons offenses, traffic and DWI cases, and borough ordinance complaints. A sample of what comes before it:

Criminal And Disorderly Persons Offenses

DWI And Traffic Offenses

Tuckerton’s main roads are Route 9, which becomes East Main Street through the center of the borough, and County Route 539 toward Parkway Exit 58; Exit 50 also feeds Route 9 from the south. Visitor traffic peaks around the Tuckerton Seaport on Main Street and each September during the Ocean County Decoy and Gunning Show at Tip Seaman Park, which can draw up to 20,000 people.

Paying Or Contesting A Tuckerton Ticket

Tuckerton handles fines this way:

  • By mail. Send a check or money order, addressed to the court at 420 East Main Street, Tuckerton, NJ 08087.
  • On your court day. The court expects fines to be paid in full at an in-person appearance, but you can submit a request for a Time Payment.
  • Time payments online. Installments under a time payment order can be made through NJMCdirect.
  • Payment questions by email. Email Tuckerton.mc@njcourts.gov with questions about court payments.

A Tuckerton fine paid without a hearing is treated as a guilty plea, and that conviction carries whatever points, surcharges and insurance consequences the law attaches. When a ticket could cost you points or your license, ask a lawyer to review it before any money changes hands. To ask for a public defender, apply at the court office window. If you are approved, a $200 fee is usually charged and must be paid in full before your court appearance.

Preparing For Your Tuckerton Court Date

  • Find your block on the notice. Check whether you are set for 9:00, 10:30, 11:30 or 12:30, and whether it is virtual or in person. The court will not move you between formats on the day.
  • Allow for the wait. In-person defendants are called in only after the virtual sessions end, so plan to be at Borough Hall for a while.
  • Apply for a public defender early. Because the fee usually has to be paid before you appear, do not leave the application until your court date.
  • Bring payment or a time payment request. If you expect to resolve the case that day, be ready to pay in full or to ask for installments.
  • Collect your documents. Pack the ticket or complaint and your driving documents, along with receipts, photos or anything else that helps explain what happened.

When A Tuckerton Charge Leaves Municipal Court

Indictable offenses fall outside what Judge Maestrey can decide. When one is charged in the borough, the complaint is transferred to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office; if the case goes forward, it is litigated at the county courthouse, Ocean County Superior Court in Toms River. Prosecutors may also decide the facts fit a lesser, disorderly persons charge and remand it to Tuckerton Municipal Court. Many first-time defendants can also apply for Pretrial Intervention, conditional dismissal or another diversion program, which can result in dismissal of the charge.

Nearby Courts

The only town that touches Tuckerton is Little Egg Harbor, which surrounds it on every side and runs a separate court on Radio Road. That Little Egg Harbor court also hears cases from Eagleswood, a few miles north on Route 9. Because the borough line is close in every direction, a stop just outside Tuckerton is usually a Little Egg Harbor case.
