Parking & Arrival

A payment drop box is at the main entrance of the Municipal Building.

When to arrive: Allow approximately 20–30 minutes before any required in-person appearance for parking, security and check-in. This is practical planning advice, not a court-mandated arrival time.

Zoom sessions require advance registration; meeting details are sent after you register. Video must stay on, and phone-only logins are not allowed. The township posts a new virtual court schedule every few months. In person, the window takes cash, checks, money orders, Visa and MasterCard; card payments are not taken by phone.

Lakewood Criminal Defense Lawyer

Lakewood had about 135,000 residents at the 2020 census, and its streets carry commuters to the Garden State Parkway, buses in and out of the Lakewood Bus Terminal, and crowds at ShoreTown Ballpark and Georgian Court University. Every one of those settings can produce a summons that ends up on Third Street. Depending on the charge, a conviction can bring fines, a license suspension, jail exposure or a lasting criminal record. Within our Ocean County criminal defense work, we represent Lakewood defendants at every stage, from the first notice to a final hearing.

Why Lakewood Clients Call Us

  • The county’s highest volume. Lakewood took in more filings than any other Ocean County municipal court in July 2025–June 2026, about 11% of the countywide total.
  • A sharp rise in DWI cases. DWI filings jumped from 218 to 304 in one year, a 39% increase, leaving Lakewood just four cases behind Toms River for the most in the county.
  • Virtual court requires registration. Lakewood’s Zoom sessions are not drop-in. You must register ahead of time, keep your camera on, and you cannot log in by phone alone.
  • Deadlines that carry penalties. The township warns that failing to answer a payable ticket adds a $10.00 penalty and can lead to a warrant and a license suspension.

Lakewood’s Virtual Court Calendar

Lakewood Municipal Court sits on Mondays and Thursdays. Every couple of months the township publishes a new virtual court schedule as a PDF, with each edition covering a block of upcoming weeks. Each virtual date has two registration times, 9:15 a.m. for the morning list and 12:30 p.m. for the afternoon list.

Lakewood switched its virtual sessions from Webex to Zoom in March 2024. The meeting information is sent to you only after you register, so an old link from a past case or a friend’s notice will not work. Virtual court is only for people whose notice is marked “Virtual Court Hearing.” Everyone else appears in person at 231 Third Street.

Your Lakewood Summons Date Is Not a Trial Date

Many Lakewood defendants miss a key point: the date printed on a summons is the deadline to answer it, by paying or by appearing, not a trial date. If you plead not guilty, a hearing notice comes later by regular mail. That makes your mailing address important. Lakewood asks defendants to report any change of address so notices reach them, and a notice sent to an old address can still lead to a missed date. Missing a court appearance can result in a bench warrant and bail being set.

Source: New Jersey Judiciary, Municipal Court Statistics, July 2025–June 2026, PDF page 432. Figures above combine the report’s criminal columns (indictable, disorderly/petty disorderly and 325 other criminal complaints), DWI and moving violations, and leave out 3,817 parking tickets. Including parking, the court recorded 19,320 total filings. Figures are reported by court, not by arresting agency or the defendant’s town of residence. A clearance rate above 100% means more cases were resolved than newly filed during the period; it is not a conviction rate. These figures are a reporting-period snapshot, not live court data.

What Lakewood’s Court Numbers Mean

Lakewood recorded 19,320 filings between July 2025 and June 2026 in the Judiciary’s statewide municipal court statistics, compared with 17,976 the year before, a rise of roughly 7.5%. Moving violations made up 12,194 of those cases, or about 63%, and the court also received 3,005 criminal filings, of which 1,076 were indictable complaints that begin in Lakewood and are then routed to the county. DWI filings grew to 304 from 218.

The court resolved 19,217 cases of all types, a 99% clearance rate; in other words, closings almost exactly matched new cases and kept pace with the higher volume. As of June 30, 2026, the statistics show 1,064 cases in backlog and 2,636 pending, a smaller backlog than Brick Township’s even though Lakewood handles more cases. These counts reflect the court’s overall workload and say nothing about the result in any individual case.

2

This number identifies the individual summons or complaint. It may be needed when communicating with the municipal court or reviewing court records.

3

Complainant or Issuing Officer

The summons may identify the police officer or other complainant who issued or signed the charge, along with the involved police agency.

4

Date, Time and Location

These fields identify when and where the alleged offense occurred. They can also help identify potentially relevant police reports, video or other evidence.

5

Court Date and Time

6

Where to Appear

Review the court location and appearance instructions carefully. Some proceedings may be conducted in person while others may be scheduled remotely.

Important: Your actual summons and any later notice from Lakewood Municipal Court control your appearance date, time, location and whether the proceeding is scheduled in person or remotely. If a later court notice differs from the information originally printed on the summons, follow the current court notice or confirm the information directly with the court.

How Zoom Hearings Work in Lakewood

Lakewood’s virtual court instructions set strict ground rules.

  • Register in advance. Use the registration link for your date on the township’s virtual court PDF. Zoom meeting details arrive after you register.
  • Video on, every time. Your camera must stay on for the whole session. Phone-only logins are not accepted.
  • Do not drive. The township tells defendants not to join from a moving car.
  • Watch the opening statement. It is posted in English and Spanish. If you need a different language, contact the court before your date.
  • No recordings. Recording the session is prohibited. If you need a copy of the proceeding, use the Judiciary’s records request form.

What Cases Does Lakewood Municipal Court Handle?

Its judge decides motor vehicle summonses, drunk driving complaints, local criminal matters below the indictable level, and township code violations. The township notes that the municipal prosecutor represents the State in these cases, usually on complaints filed by police. Common Lakewood charges include:

Criminal and Disorderly Persons Offenses

DWI and Traffic Offenses

Lakewood summonses can come from Garden State Parkway Exit 89, Route 9, Route 70, Route 88 and County Routes 526, 528, 547 and 549. Parking is a large share of the work too: the Judiciary’s figures count 3,817 parking tickets filed in Lakewood over the year.

Paying or Contesting a Lakewood Ticket

If your ticket is payable without an appearance, Lakewood takes payment in several ways:

  • Online at NJMCdirect, or through the NJ Courts payment portal for traffic fines.
  • By check or money order sent through the mail.
  • In the drop box at the main entrance of the Municipal Building.
  • At the court window, open 9 a.m.–4 p.m., with cash, a check or money order, or a Visa or MasterCard. Card payments are not taken over the phone.
  • In installments, if the court agrees. Ask the court to mail you a time-payment order.

Remember that a payment closes the case as a guilty plea. Points, MVC surcharges and any suspension follow. If the ticket is one that can affect your license, get legal advice before sending money. Drivers who live out of state may ask to defend certain traffic or ordinance tickets by affidavit, and a plea-by-mail form is available from the court. To ask for a public defender, file the township’s financial questionnaire; the judge reviews it, and if it is granted the application fee ranges from $0 to $200.

Preparing for Your Lakewood Court Date

  • Check the format. If your notice does not say “Virtual Court Hearing,” plan to come to 231 Third Street in person.
  • Register early for Zoom. Find your date on the current schedule PDF and register so the meeting details reach you in time.
  • Set up your camera. Test your video before the session, choose a quiet room, and never log in from behind the wheel.
  • Call during phone hours. The court’s lines are 732-364-2500, extension 5988, and 848-207-2273, answered 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Complaints are accepted only between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
  • Bring your documents. Keep the summons or hearing notice within reach, along with your driver’s license, proof of insurance and any paperwork that supports what you will tell the judge.

When a Lakewood Charge Leaves Municipal Court

Indictable charges belong to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office. More than a thousand of them begin in Lakewood each year, and those that move forward are litigated at the county courthouse in Toms River (Ocean County Superior Court), where grand jury review and the heavier penalties for indictable crimes come into play. Not every one stays there; the county prosecutor can downgrade a complaint to the disorderly persons level and return it to Third Street for the municipal judge to decide. For defendants with a clean history, diversion programs such as Pretrial Intervention and conditional dismissal can resolve the matter without a conviction.

Nearby Courts

On Lakewood’s borders are Brick Township, Jackson and Toms River, and Howell Township in Monmouth County lies to the north. Each of these towns has a separate municipal court, and a summons is decided by the court in the town where the violation happened, even if you live in Lakewood.
