Parking & Arrival
Ocean Township cases are heard in the Lacey Township courtroom at 818 West Lacey Road, Forked River. The former Waretown court office at 50 Railroad Avenue is closed.
When to arrive: Allow approximately 20–30 minutes before any required in-person appearance for parking, security and check-in. This is practical planning advice, not a court-mandated arrival time.
Ocean Township closed its own court office on July 27, 2026 and joined Lacey Township’s shared service court. Pay online at NJMCdirect. A Plea by Mail form and the Public Defender/Time Payment Application (Form 5A) are available, along with opening statement videos in English and Spanish.

Ocean Township Criminal Defense Lawyer
A charge in Ocean Township usually comes from a Route 9 or Parkway stop, a call for police help, or a dispute between neighbors, and the court that decides it now sits a few miles north in Forked River. A disorderly persons conviction exposes you to as long as six months in the county jail and a criminal record, and a DWI conviction brings statutory penalties that can include an ignition interlock and a license suspension. Our Ocean County criminal defense lawyers handle Waretown cases in the new shared courtroom from arraignment to trial.
Why Ocean Township Clients Call Us
- The court moved. Older paperwork may still point to the Waretown office at 50 Railroad Avenue, which is closed. We make sure you know your current date and location so you are not waiting outside an empty building.
- A shared calendar in a new town. Waretown cases now run on the Lacey courtroom’s schedule, and some sessions fall on a different weekday than defendants expect. We track the exact date on your notice.
- A court that fell behind. State figures show Ocean Township resolved about 88% as many cases as it received in the latest court year, one of the lowest clearance rates in Ocean County.
- Mostly traffic, heavily Parkway and Route 9. Moving violations made up more than four of every five Ocean Township filings, so points and license consequences are at stake in most cases here.
Ocean Township’s Move to the Lacey Courtroom
Effective July 27, 2026, Ocean Township closed its municipal court office at 50 Railroad Avenue in Waretown and joined a shared service court run by Lacey Township. The change is about the building and staff, not the case itself. Here is what stayed the same and what changed:
- Still an Ocean Township case. Tickets written in Waretown remain Ocean Township matters, with their own judge, Philip M. Miller.
- New address. Appearances in person now take place at 818 West Lacey Road in Forked River, the Lacey municipal building.
- Shared staff. Christina DeMey, who administers the Lacey court, is the administrator for Ocean Township as well. Lacey’s own docket is handled from the same office, so make sure your paperwork says Ocean Township.
- New phone extension. Ocean Township court business goes to 609-693-1100, extension 2236.
- Office hours. The shared court office in Forked River is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Call extension 2236 before a visit.

Breakdown by case type
Court performance (criminal and traffic)
Source: New Jersey Judiciary, Municipal Court Statistics, July 2025–June 2026, PDF page 439. Figures above combine the report’s criminal columns (indictable, disorderly/petty disorderly and 92 other criminal complaints), DWI and moving violations, and leave out 9 parking tickets. Including parking, the court recorded 2,703 total filings. Figures are reported by court, not by arresting agency or the defendant’s town of residence. A clearance rate above 100% means more cases were resolved than newly filed during the period; it is not a conviction rate. These figures are a reporting-period snapshot, not live court data.
What Ocean Township’s Court Numbers Mean
Judiciary figures for the July 2025 to June 2026 court year describe the last year before the move to Lacey. They show 2,703 filings in Ocean Township, about 11.9% more than the 2,416 recorded the prior year. Moving violations accounted for 2,252, or about 83% of the total. The court took in 386 criminal filings, counting indictable complaints that started here, and 56 DWI filings, up from 52.
Resolutions lagged behind. The court closed 2,368 matters, an 88% clearance rate, which means the court closed about 12% fewer matters than it received. The report shows 729 cases in backlog and 1,119 pending as of June 2026. Whether the shared court changes those numbers will not show up until next year’s report, and none of these figures forecast the result of any single case.

Paying or Contesting an Ocean Township Ticket
Ocean Township tickets that can be paid without seeing the judge can be paid online through NJMCdirect, and a Plea by Mail form is available from the township. Before bringing a payment to the Forked River window in person, call extension 2236 to ask which payment methods it takes for Ocean Township cases.
Any payment you make without contesting the ticket counts as a guilty plea. Points, MVC surcharges and higher insurance premiums can follow, and a conviction is very hard to reopen later. Where points or a suspension are possible, get a lawyer’s view before paying anything. If you cannot afford one, file the Public Defender/Time Payment Application (Form 5A), which is also used to ask for more time to pay a fine.
Preparing for Your Ocean Township Court Date
- Ignore the old Waretown address. Nothing is heard at 50 Railroad Avenue anymore. In-person dates are at 818 West Lacey Road, Forked River.
- Check the weekday. Most sessions are on Tuesdays, but some third-week sessions fall on a Wednesday. Go by the day printed on your notice, and call 609-693-1100, extension 2236, with any question.
- Watch the opening statement. Viewing the English or Spanish video ahead of time helps you understand your rights and the choices the judge will offer.
- Keep your documents together. Bring the summons, your license, registration and insurance card, along with any dashcam video, photos or repair receipts you plan to rely on.
When an Ocean Township Charge Leaves Municipal Court
Felony-level charges (New Jersey calls them indictable offenses) are filed in Ocean Township but cannot be decided by Judge Miller. Each such complaint is transferred to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, which can present it to a grand jury and pursue it in Ocean County Superior Court in Toms River. A portion of those charges get downgraded and remanded to the municipal court for resolution as disorderly persons offenses. Depending on your history, a diversion program like Pretrial Intervention or conditional dismissal may allow the charge to be dismissed after a period of compliance.
Nearby Courts
Waretown’s land neighbors are Lacey Township, up Route 9 toward Forked River, and Barnegat, down Route 9, and it also shares a line with Berkeley Township. Across Barnegat Bay are Long Beach Township and Barnegat Light. Each runs its own municipal court, and the place written on your ticket sets the court.
