Security Screening and Zoom Notices at Plainfield Court

What Plainfield’s Court Numbers Mean

Plainfield Municipal Court received 15,271 criminal and traffic filings from July 2025 to June 2026, about 13% more than the 13,565 recorded the year before, state court statistics show. Criminal work is a large share here: 1,168 indictable complaints, which move to Superior Court unless a prosecutor downgrades them, and 1,768 disorderly-persons and petty-disorderly complaints. DWI filings climbed from 186 to 216. Moving violations accounted for 10,974, about 72%.

Plainfield resolved 14,389 cases, a 94% clearance rate, so it fell somewhat behind its intake. The backlog reached 1,680, and 3,591 cases remained active as June 2026 closed. Court runs Monday through Thursday, largely on Zoom, which helps move volume but makes it easy to miss a mailed notice. These numbers exclude the 37,628 parking tickets issued in the city. Statistics like these describe a busy docket; they are no guide to the outcome of a specific case.

When a Plainfield Charge Leaves Municipal Court

Third- and fourth-degree crimes, such as possession of cocaine or heroin, burglary, or theft above $200, may begin with a Plainfield police complaint but cannot be decided in Plainfield Municipal Court. They are sent up to the county level, where the Union County Prosecutor’s Office takes them to the Superior Court, located in Elizabeth. Prosecutors sometimes downgrade an indictable charge and return it to Plainfield as a disorderly persons offense, which lowers the exposure significantly. A first-time defendant may be a candidate for PTI (Pretrial Intervention) or a different diversion track that, once completed, ends with the charge dismissed.
