Lavallette Municipal Court – What To Know
Reviewed by William A. Proetta, Esq. · Updated
Lavallette Municipal Court meets on the second floor of the borough’s Municipal Building at 1306 Grand Central Avenue, Lavallette, NJ 08735, and its sessions start at 5:30 p.m. on a Wednesday, usually the second Wednesday of the month. It hears the motor vehicle tickets, DWI charges and disorderly persons complaints that arise in this small Barnegat Peninsula borough, where Route 35 runs the length of town. The borough does not hold a session every month, so a missed date can mean a long wait for the next one. To talk about a Lavallette charge, dial (848) 238-2100 at any hour, 24/7, and our staff can assist you in Spanish (se habla español).

Parking & Arrival
The court is on the second floor of the Lavallette Municipal Building, at the corner of Grand Central Avenue (Route 35 North) and Brooklyn Avenue. The borough also posts a Zoom link for virtual sessions.
When to arrive: Allow approximately 20–30 minutes before any required in-person appearance for parking, security and check-in. This is practical planning advice, not a court-mandated arrival time.
Traffic tickets can be paid on NJMCdirect (Visa or MasterCard; a convenience fee applies). A payment drop box is outside the court office lobby.

Lavallette Criminal Defense Lawyer
Some people who end up in Lavallette court were visiting for a beach day or a summer rental, not planning on a ticket or an arrest. A DWI on Route 35 or a disorderly persons charge after a night out still carries real exposure: license consequences, fines, possible jail time and a record that shows up on background checks. Lawyers in our Ocean County criminal defense practice appear for people charged in Lavallette and can stand in for you even if you live far from the shore.
Why Lavallette Clients Call Us
- Court meets rarely. Some months have no Lavallette evening session at all. Getting ready early matters when the next date may be a month or more away.
- The office keeps evening hours. Staff are in Monday and Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday from 6:30 to 8:00 a.m., so calls during a normal workday may not be answered. We handle that contact for you.
- Help for out-of-town defendants. Lavallette is a summer destination, and the court runs virtual sessions on Zoom. We help clients who live elsewhere figure out whether they must make the trip.
- Route 35 is the main road in and out. Grand Central Avenue carries Route 35 North past the court itself, and it is the borough’s main through road.
Lavallette’s Court Schedule
Lavallette Municipal Court sits on Wednesday evenings, generally the second Wednesday of the month, and sessions begin at 5:30 p.m. unless another time is set. Some months have no session, and extra dates are added in the summer when the docket calls for them. The borough announces any closing of the court office on its website, so check before making a trip.
The notice the court mails you sets your exact date and hour. Call 732-830-1911 during office hours if you want to double-check it.

Breakdown by case type
Court performance (criminal and traffic)
Source: New Jersey Judiciary, Municipal Court Statistics, July 2025–June 2026, PDF page 433. Figures above combine the report’s criminal columns (indictable, disorderly/petty disorderly and 40 other criminal complaints), DWI and moving violations, and leave out 1,901 parking tickets. Including parking, the court recorded 2,560 total filings. Figures are reported by court, not by arresting agency or the defendant’s town of residence. A clearance rate above 100% means more cases were resolved than newly filed during the period; it is not a conviction rate. These figures are a reporting-period snapshot, not live court data.
What Lavallette’s Court Numbers Mean
NJ Judiciary data for the year ending June 2026 show that Lavallette’s court received 2,560 filings, down about 7.1% from 2,756 the prior year. Parking tickets made up the large majority, 1,901 filings or roughly 74%, which is the second-highest parking share among Ocean County municipal courts in that report. Moving violations totaled 569, about 22% of the docket. Criminal filings came to 88, and DWI filings dropped to just 2 from 8.
The court disposed of 2,688 matters, a 105% clearance rate, meaning it closed more cases than it opened and shrank its docket. At the end of June 2026 the report counted 173 cases in backlog and 307 pending. With counts this small, a handful of cases can move the DWI and criminal figures sharply from one year to the next. These statistics show how busy the court was; they say nothing about how a particular case will turn out.
Understanding Your Lavallette Municipal Court Summons
A Lavallette summons contains important information about the alleged offense including, the statute charged, the person or officer who issued the complaint, the location of court and when you are required to appear. The numbered areas below identify information worth carefully reviewing.
Key Information to Check
Court and Court Code
This identifies the municipality and court associated with the summons. For a case arising in Lavallette, look carefully at the court information printed on your paperwork.

Complainant or Issuing Officer
The summons may identify the police officer or other complainant who issued or signed the charge, along with the involved police agency.
Date, Time and Location
These fields identify when and where the alleged offense occurred. They can also help identify potentially relevant police reports, video or other evidence.

In-Person and Zoom Sessions in Lavallette
Lavallette’s evening sessions are held in the second-floor courtroom of the Municipal Building, at the corner of Grand Central Avenue and Brooklyn Avenue. Virtual sessions run on Zoom. Meeting details change, so use the information tied to your own date and do not reuse an old link.
Your notice is what tells you whether to come to Grand Central Avenue or log on. For any question about format, call the court at 732-830-1911 during office hours or email Lavallette.mc@njcourts.gov well before the session. With so few dates on the calendar, a misunderstanding about format can push your case back by months or lead to a failure-to-appear problem.

Lavallette covers less than a square mile, and Route 35, which carries beach traffic north and south along the peninsula, is its main road. The borough’s nine ocean beaches and two Barnegat Bay beaches draw summer crowds.
Paying or Contesting a Lavallette Ticket
Lavallette offers two ways to pay:
- Online at NJMCdirect. Have your ticket and license plate number ready. Visa and MasterCard are accepted, and a convenience fee is charged.
- Drop box. A payment drop box sits outside the lobby of the court office in the Municipal Building.
Questions about a ticket go to the court office by phone or email during its evening hours.
Before you pay, understand what payment does. Sending money on a ticket is the same as pleading guilty, and it locks in any motor vehicle points, state surcharges and the insurance consequences that follow. If the offense could add points to your record or take away your driving privileges, get a lawyer’s view before any money changes hands. A defendant who cannot afford private counsel may apply to the court for a municipal public defender.
Preparing for Your Lavallette Court Date
- Mark the evening start. Sessions begin at 5:30 p.m., not in the morning. Plan around Route 35 traffic if you are driving down.
- Look up the stairs. The court is on the second floor of the Municipal Building at 1306 Grand Central Avenue.
- Reach the office during its hours. If you need to ask a question, call Monday or Thursday evening or early Wednesday morning, and check the borough website for any office closing.
- Do not count on a quick reschedule. Because the borough calendar sometimes skips a month, a postponed Lavallette case can wait well beyond a few weeks for its new date.
- Bring your documents. Carry your summons, license, registration, proof of insurance and anything that supports your side, such as photos or a rental agreement.
When a Lavallette Charge Leaves Municipal Court
A complaint for an indictable crime may be signed in Lavallette, but the borough court cannot decide it. They are sent on to county prosecutors, and cases that move forward are tried in Ocean County Superior Court in Toms River. If the prosecutor decides the conduct fits a lesser offense, the case can be downgraded and returned to Lavallette. Depending on your history, Pretrial Intervention, conditional dismissal and other diversionary programs may end in a dismissal once you finish the terms.
Nearby Courts
Lavallette is bordered by Toms River, whose Dover Beaches neighborhoods sit on either side of the borough, and a ticket written there goes to Toms River Municipal Court. Other courts along the barrier island include Seaside Heights, Seaside Park, Brick Township and Bay Head, along with Mantoloking and Point Pleasant Beach. The court that hears your case is the one for the town where the ticket or complaint was issued.
