Parking & Arrival

Confirm parking and the court entrance before visiting 318 Harrison Avenue. Follow posted parking restrictions; do not assume a visitor space or free parking will be available.

When to arrive: Allow approximately 20–30 minutes before any required in-person appearance for parking, security and check-in. This is practical planning advice, not a court-mandated arrival time.

Before you go: Check the latest summons or court notice and the official municipal court page. Court personnel, calendars, hearing formats, office hours and parking arrangements can change.

Your latest court notice controls your date, time, and appearance instructions. The court’s office hours aren’t your court time, and regular session days don’t tell you when you must appear. DWI cases get their own sessions, scheduled as needed. Keep your ticket or complaint number ready when you call, and keep every later notice with your original paperwork.

Source: New Jersey Judiciary, Municipal Court Statistics, July 2025–June 2026, PDF page 253. Figures are reported by court, not necessarily by the arresting police agency or a defendant's town of residence. Total filings include parking tickets. Criminal filings use the report’s Criminal Total column. A clearance rate above 100% means more cases were resolved than newly filed during the period; it is not a conviction rate. These figures are a reporting-period snapshot, not live court data.

What Harrison’s Court Numbers Mean

The total hides the real story. From July 2025 through June 2026, the New Jersey Judiciary reported 46,555 filings in Harrison Municipal Court, down about 6% from 49,541 the year before. But that drop came almost entirely from parking:

  • Parking filings fell about 16% (41,575 to 35,021) and still made up about 75% of the total.
  • Moving-violation filings rose about 53% (6,192 to 9,456).
  • DWI filings rose about 54% (173 to 266).
  • Criminal filings totaled 1,812.

In other words, Harrison’s traffic and DWI enforcement climbed sharply, with DWI filings up by more than half, even as fewer parking tickets pulled the total down. The criminal total also counts indictable complaints sent to Superior Court, and the figures include tickets written by agencies other than the Harrison police, so they measure the court’s workload rather than the number of residents charged.

The 99% clearance rate means the court resolved roughly as many matters as were newly filed. It’s not a conviction or dismissal rate, and none of these figures predicts the outcome of an individual case.

Which Agency Issued Your Harrison Summons?

Not every Harrison ticket or complaint comes from the Harrison Police Department. The New Jersey State Police, transit police, and the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office also issue summonses returnable to Harrison Municipal Court. With the Harrison PATH station and major highways running through town, out-of-town agencies are common.

Check both the issuing agency and the court on your paperwork. If several tickets or complaints came from one incident, review each one separately. The agency alone doesn’t tell you where every related charge is pending.

What to Expect at Harrison Municipal Court

Harrison police usually set up a table, a metal detector and a sign-in book for court at the Town Hall entrance. Once you are through security, head straight into the courtroom and check in.

The municipal prosecutor usually meets with attorneys and people representing themselves right inside the courtroom, calling people up one at a time. When the prosecutor has finished with everyone, the judge comes out and begins hearing cases. If you have a lawyer, your attorney handles that conference for you, already knowing the evidence, and works toward a dismissal, downgrade or plea.

Because Harrison runs hybrid sessions, check your notice to see whether you are expected in person or on video. For a video appearance, use the connection information on your notice, use your last name as your screen name as the court asks, and join from a quiet place where you can stay for the whole session. Before your date, watch the Municipal Court Opening Statement video on the town’s court page; it explains your rights.

Charges Heard in Harrison Municipal Court

Most criminal cases in Harrison are disorderly persons offenses such as simple assault, harassment, disorderly conduct, shoplifting, theft under $200, criminal mischief and resisting arrest. Criminal mischief is graded by the amount of damage, and higher amounts are indictable.

Harrison Traffic Tickets and DWI Charges

With I-280 running through the center of town and crowds heading to Sports Illustrated Stadium and the PATH station, Harrison’s traffic docket stays busy. How you respond depends on the ticket:

  • Payable tickets. You can pay online at NJMCdirect.com, by mail (include your ticket or complaint number on the check), or in the drop box at Town Hall in an envelope marked “VIOLATIONS.” Paying is a guilty plea, so any points, MVC surcharges, and insurance increases still apply.
  • Want to contest it? Harrison asks people disputing a payable ticket to contact the court at least seven days before the court date on the ticket. Some matters may qualify for online resolution. If that deadline is close or has passed, call the court right away.
  • Appearance required. DWI, refusal and tickets marked “court appearance required” go before the judge, at Town Hall or on Zoom. On Zoom, your screen name must match your last name, and you stay muted until called.

Harrison DWI and refusal cases, which rose sharply last court year, are covered on our Harrison DWI lawyer page. Suspended-license, uninsured-driver and reckless-driving tickets are in our Hudson County traffic ticket guide.

Important: Your actual summons and any later notice from Harrison Municipal Court control your appearance date, time, location and whether the proceeding is scheduled in person or remotely. If a later court notice differs from the information originally printed on the summons, follow the current court notice or confirm the information directly with the court.

Keep a separate record for each case: its number, the charge, and the next court date. An update to one case doesn’t necessarily change the others from the same incident. If you’re unsure what a notice requires, sort it out before your court date, and keep copies of every notice and any confirmation of a schedule change.

When a Charge Leaves Harrison

A Harrison complaint for an indictable crime, including most drug possession charges and aggravated assault, burglary and theft over $200, is transferred to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office and Hudson County Superior Court in Jersey City, a short ride east on I-280 or the PATH. Watch for a transfer notice; some charges are downgraded and come back to Town Hall. For penalty ranges and programs that can avoid a conviction, see which Hudson County court hears your case and ways to avoid a conviction in Hudson County. Dismissed charges and many disorderly persons convictions can later be expunged; see our Hudson County expungement guide.
