Parking & Arrival
The North Bergen Municipal Court has a small parking lot of approximately 15 visitor spots. Meter parking can be found on Bergen Turnpike or free street parking can be found on cross streets such as Grand Avenue and 43rd Street.
When to arrive: Allow approximately 20–30 minutes before any required in-person appearance for parking, security and check-in. This is practical planning advice, not a court-mandated arrival time.

What North Bergen’s Court Numbers Mean
From July 2025 through June 2026, the New Jersey Judiciary reported 99,709 filings in North Bergen Municipal Court, down about 9% from 109,492. But the categories moved in different directions:
- Parking filings: 81,845, about 82% of the total.
- Criminal filings rose about 3.5% (2,313 to 2,393), even as the total fell.
- Moving-violation filings fell about 28% (21,454 to 15,385).
- DWI filings fell about 26% (117 to 86).
So the total is mostly parking tickets, not arrests. The criminal count includes indictable complaints that start in North Bergen and move to Superior Court, so it isn’t limited to cases decided in North Bergen.
The 127% overall clearance rate means the court resolved more matters than were newly filed, largely by working through older cases. The criminal clearance rate was 81%, meaning fewer criminal matters were resolved than were filed. Neither figure is a conviction or dismissal rate, and neither predicts how long an individual case will take or how it will turn out.
What to Expect at North Bergen Municipal Court
When you walk into the courthouse, the violations window, where you pay tickets and fines, is directly to your right, along with the restrooms. Security, with a metal detector, is straight ahead. Once you are through, the courtroom is directly in front of you.
Attorneys meet the prosecutor privately in a back area that is generally closed to the public. After finishing with the attorneys, the prosecutor usually comes out and speaks with people representing themselves in the hallway waiting area between security and the courtroom. If you are on your own, that conversation about your case often happens in a busy hallway; with a lawyer, it happens in private, with the evidence already reviewed.

The court also accepts citizen complaints and offers dispute resolution for minor matters; if a private complaint was filed against you, talk to a lawyer before your first date.
Charges Heard in North Bergen Municipal Court
Disorderly persons cases in North Bergen commonly include simple assault, harassment, disorderly conduct, shoplifting and theft under $200, criminal mischief, resisting arrest and drug paraphernalia. Read the statute and grading on each complaint, not just the name of the charge. One incident can produce several charges in different courts, and an update on one complaint doesn’t necessarily change the others.
Shoplifting and Drug Charges in North Bergen
With heavy retail along Tonnelle Avenue, North Bergen sees a steady number of shoplifting cases.
- Shoplifting. The value of the merchandise decides the grade. Under $200 is a disorderly persons offense in municipal court, and even a first conviction carries mandatory community service. - Drug charges. Find the substance and the exact statute on your complaint. “Drug possession” alone doesn’t tell you which court has the case or what penalties apply. In either case, keep the original evidence and paperwork intact, write down potential witnesses, and review the records with a lawyer. A short description in the complaint rarely captures the whole event.
Traffic Tickets, Parking Notices, and DWI
- Payable tickets. If your ticket doesn’t say “court appearance required,” you can usually pay at NJMCdirect.com. Paying is a guilty plea, so any points, MVC surcharges, and insurance increases still apply. If you want to contest it, follow the instructions for requesting a hearing before you pay.
- Parking suspension notices. North Bergen residents with unpaid parking tickets less than three years old can receive license suspension notices from the state. Note the effective suspension date and contact the court right away. Paying one ticket doesn’t resolve the others.
- Special parking sessions. The township holds walk-in parking ticket sessions, usually twice a quarter, in the late afternoon and evening. You can also schedule an appointment online or by phone.
- Appearance required. DWI, refusal, and tickets marked “court appearance required” go before the judge.

If you need a different date, contact the court before your appearance and keep the confirmation. A request isn’t an adjournment until the court confirms it.
