It hears disorderly persons and petty disorderly persons offenses, traffic tickets, DWI charges and city ordinance violations; indictable crimes go to Hudson County Superior Court in Jersey City. What Union City’s Court Numbers Mean

From July 2025 through June 2026, the New Jersey Judiciary reported 140,967 filings in Union City Municipal Court, up about 15% from 122,141 the year before. Almost all of that increase was parking:

• Parking filings rose from 112,253 to 131,030, about 93% of the total.
• Criminal filings were nearly flat: 5,126 to 5,151.
• Moving violations were unchanged: 4,635 to 4,637.
• DWI filings rose about 17%: 127 to 149.

So the bigger total reflects more parking tickets, not more arrests. Criminal filings include indictable, disorderly persons, and petty disorderly persons complaints. They count filings, not individual people, Union City residents, or tickets written only by the Union City Police Department.

The court’s overall clearance rate was 109%, meaning it resolved more matters than were newly filed. But the criminal clearance rate was 66%, so criminal cases came in faster than they were resolved. Neither figure measures convictions or dismissals, or predicts how long any one case will take.

What to Expect at Union City Municipal Court

Union City Municipal Court is on the second floor of City Hall. At the top of the stairs, the courtroom is on your left, the violations window is straight ahead and the restrooms are on your right. Before entering the courtroom, you pass through a small security screening room with a police officer and a metal detector.

Inside, check in with the court administrator at the front of the courtroom on the left. The prosecutor usually meets with people at the front of the courtroom, to the right of the judge, and sometimes meets with attorneys privately in a separate office at the back of the courtroom to the right of the judge’s bench. Defendants without a lawyer generally talk with the prosecutor in the open courtroom; a lawyer can work out your case in that private conference instead.

Criminal Complaints Heard in Union City

The statute and subsection on your complaint decide its grading and which court hears it. Union City reports more than 5,000 criminal filings a year, and the disorderly persons charges we defend there most often are simple assault (N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1(a)), harassment (N.J.S.A. 2C:33-4), disorderly conduct (N.J.S.A. 2C:33-2), shoplifting under $200 (N.J.S.A. 2C:20-11), common along the Bergenline Avenue shopping corridor and carrying mandatory community service even on a first conviction, theft under $200 (N.J.S.A. 2C:20-3), criminal mischief (N.J.S.A. 2C:17-3, graded by the damage), resisting arrest (N.J.S.A. 2C:29-2) and drug paraphernalia (N.J.S.A. 2C:36-2).
Most drug possession charges (N.J.S.A. 2C:35-10), along with aggravated assault, burglary, and theft over $200, are indictable. They’re prosecuted by the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Hudson County Superior Court.

Before Your Appearance

Gather your complaint, every court notice, and any photos, messages, receipts, or other records. Keep complete originals with their dates and context; don’t rely on a cropped screenshot. A short written timeline helps separate what you saw yourself from what someone else told you.

City Ordinance Violations

Union City also issues complaints for violating city ordinances. An ordinance violation isn’t a disorderly persons offense, even though both are heard in municipal court, but it still deserves careful attention. Find the ordinance section, the conduct alleged, any response deadline, and whether you must appear. Sometimes a disorderly persons charge can be amended down to an ordinance violation as part of resolving a case.

Union City Traffic Tickets and DWI

• Payable tickets. A Union City ticket without “court appearance required” can usually be paid on NJMCdirect with court code 0910. Paying is a guilty plea, with any points, MVC surcharges and insurance increases that follow, so check first whether the online case-resolution option below fits your ticket.
• Online Municipal Case Resolution. For certain payable traffic tickets, you can ask the municipal prosecutor through NJMCdirect to review the ticket for a lesser charge. Being able to ask doesn’t guarantee a reduction, and it doesn’t excuse a required appearance.
• Appearance required. DWI, refusal and tickets marked “court appearance required” go before a Union City judge, in person at City Hall or on Zoom as your mailed notice directs.

Keep each summons or complaint with its latest notice, and write down the case number and court date. When you contact the court, give enough information to identify your case and explain your request clearly. Asking for an adjournment doesn’t change your date. Wait for the court’s response, and follow your current notice until a change is approved.

Preparing for Your Court Date

• Zoom hearing: find the right connection instructions, test your camera and microphone, and use a quiet room.
• In person: allow time to reach 3715 Palisade Avenue (2nd floor) and get through the entrance.

• Need an interpreter or an accommodation? Ask the court in advance.

What to Expect as Your Case Moves Forward

Your first appearance may not end the case. Later steps can include discovery, reviewing the evidence, discussing a resolution with the prosecutor, and preparing for trial. Any plea agreement needs the judge’s approval and a factual basis. Showing up to court or asking for a review doesn’t, by itself, lead to any particular outcome.

Municipal court trials are decided by a judge, not a jury. Keep copies of every court notice and written disposition so you know what was ordered and what you still owe.
