Parking & Arrival

Confirm parking and the court entrance before visiting 34 Sherman Avenue. Follow posted parking restrictions; do not assume a visitor space or free parking will be available.

When to arrive: Allow approximately 20–30 minutes before any required in-person appearance for parking, security and check-in. This is practical planning advice, not a court-mandated arrival time.

The Borough announced that court operations returned to 34 Sherman Avenue in June 2025. Older relocation information may be outdated.

Figures are reported by court, not necessarily by the arresting police agency or a defendant's town of residence. Total filings include parking tickets. Criminal filings use the report’s Criminal Total column. A clearance rate above 100% means more cases were resolved than newly filed during the period; it is not a conviction rate. These figures are a reporting-period snapshot, not live court data.

Temporary Court Location: Harrison Municipal Court

East Newark’s municipal building is at 34 Sherman Avenue, East Newark. The municipal court, however, is temporarily operating out of Harrison Municipal Court at 318 Harrison Avenue, Harrison, NJ 07029. Court sessions and the court office are at the Harrison location for now.

  • Go to 318 Harrison Avenue for an East Newark court date unless your latest notice says otherwise. Sherman Avenue is not the court location right now.
  • You’re still in East Newark Municipal Court. Your case keeps its East Newark complaint number and court code (0902) even though it’s heard in Harrison’s building.
  • Call before you travel if your notice is older or lists a different address. The court will confirm where your case is being heard.
  • Bring your court notice, your ticket or complaint, photo ID, and any documents the court told you to provide. Keep your ticket or case number handy when you call.

What East Newark’s Court Numbers Mean

From July 2025 through June 2026, the New Jersey Judiciary reported 8,049 filings in East Newark Municipal Court, up about 14% from the year before, a large caseload for a borough of its size. Moving violations accounted for 2,011, criminal filings for 358, and the remaining roughly 5,600 were mostly parking and other matters.

The figure that stands out is DWI: 41 filings, more than triple the year before. The court resolved 7,777 matters, a 97% clearance rate, and ended the year with 1,476 cases pending, 792 of them counted as backlogged. These numbers describe the court’s workload, not the likely outcome of any one case.

What Cases Does East Newark Municipal Court Handle?

East Newark Municipal Court hears traffic and parking violations, DWI charges, borough ordinance violations, and disorderly persons and petty disorderly persons offenses. Common charges include:

The disorderly persons charges its court hears include simple assault (N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1(a)), disorderly conduct (N.J.S.A. 2C:33-2), harassment (N.J.S.A. 2C:33-4), criminal mischief (N.J.S.A. 2C:17-3), resisting arrest (N.J.S.A. 2C:29-2), shoplifting and theft under $200 (N.J.S.A. 2C:20-11 and 2C:20-3) and drug paraphernalia (N.J.S.A. 2C:36-2).

DWI and Traffic Offenses

East Newark’s motor vehicle cases include stops near the I-280 ramps and the Clay Street Bridge to Newark: DWI (N.J.S.A. 39:4-50), refusal to submit to a breath test (N.J.S.A. 39:4-50.4a), reckless driving (N.J.S.A. 39:4-96), driving without insurance (N.J.S.A. 39:6B-2) and driving while suspended (N.J.S.A. 39:3-40).
More serious charges are indictable and leave East Newark Municipal Court entirely; see the Superior Court section below.

2

Summons or Complaint Number

This number identifies the individual summons or complaint. It may be needed when communicating with the municipal court or reviewing court records.

3

Complainant or Issuing Officer

The summons may identify the police officer or other complainant who issued or signed the charge, along with the involved police agency.

4

5

Court Date and Time

6

Where to Appear

Review the court location and appearance instructions carefully. Some proceedings may be conducted in person while others may be scheduled remotely.

Important: Your actual summons and any later notice from East Newark Municipal Court control your appearance date, time, location and whether the proceeding is scheduled in person or remotely. If a later court notice differs from the information originally printed on the summons, follow the current court notice or confirm the information directly with the court.

In-Person and Remote Appearances

Your notice tells you whether your hearing is in person or remote. East Newark’s court page has a video guide to attending court remotely, but not every hearing is virtual.

  • Watch the Municipal Court Opening Statement video before your court date. East Newark asks defendants to review it. It explains your rights.
  • For a remote hearing, have the connection instructions ready, test your camera and microphone, and use a quiet room. If you haven’t received access information, call the court before your date.
  • Need an interpreter? Tell the court before your appearance.

Paying or Contesting an East Newark Ticket

East Newark accepts payments:

  • In person at the court office (cash, check, or money order)
  • By mail, with checks or money orders payable to East Newark Municipal Court
  • Online at NJMCdirect.com

If your East Newark summons says “court appearance required,” it can’t be paid. On a payable ticket, paying is a guilty plea, with points, MVC surcharges and insurance increases, so contact us before paying if you want to contest it.

East Newark resumed license and registration suspensions for unpaid parking tickets as of October 1, 2024, so old parking tickets shouldn’t be ignored.

Preparing for Your Court Date

  • Confirm the location as well as the date. With the court temporarily at 318 Harrison Avenue, check your notice carefully, and make sure the court has your current address, phone and email.
  • Request any postponement early, and get confirmation that it was granted.
  • Don’t expect the first date to end the case. A not-guilty plea often leads to a trial on a later date.
  • Keep copies of every notice and follow the instructions for future appearances.
  • Talk to a lawyer first. Don’t discuss what happened with the prosecutor or officer before you have advice.
