Parking & Arrival
The court is in the Public Safety Wing on the ground floor of the Edison municipal complex at 100 Municipal Boulevard. The court shares a parking lot with the police department and town hall and there is a massive parking lot with several hundred free parking stalls.
When to arrive: Allow approximately 20–30 minutes before any required in-person appearance for parking, security and check-in. This is practical planning advice, not a court-mandated arrival time.
The Township requests that email be used for court correspondence whenever possible.

What Cases Does Edison Municipal Court Handle?
Municipal courts in New Jersey have limited jurisdiction. Edison Municipal Court hears:
- Traffic and motor vehicle violations – speeding, careless and reckless driving, driving while suspended, driving without insurance, and similar Title 39 offenses.
- DWI and refusal – drunk and drugged driving charges and refusal to submit to a breath test.
- Disorderly persons and petty disorderly persons offenses – New Jersey’s version of misdemeanors, such as simple assault, shoplifting under $200, harassment, and disorderly conduct.
- Edison ordinance violations – local code, noise, and property violations.
- Parking tickets.
What Edison Municipal Court Does Not Handle
Indictable crimes (felonies) — such as aggravated assault, burglary, most drug possession, and theft over $200 — start with a complaint in Edison but are sent to the Middlesex County Superior Court, 56 Paterson Street, New Brunswick, and prosecuted by the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office. Sometimes an indictable charge is downgraded to a disorderly persons offense and sent back to Edison Municipal Court. That can make a big difference in the outcome.
Domestic violence restraining orders (TROs and FROs) are handled in the Family Part of Superior Court. A related criminal charge, like simple assault, may still be heard in Edison Municipal Court.
Understanding Your Edison Summons
Understanding Your Edison Municipal Court Summons
A Edison summons contains important information about the alleged offense including, the statute charged, the person or officer who issued the complaint, the location of court and when you are required to appear. The numbered areas below identify information worth carefully reviewing.
Key Information to Check
Court and Court Code
This identifies the municipality and court associated with the summons. For a case arising in Edison, look carefully at the court information printed on your paperwork.
Summons or Complaint Number
This number identifies the individual summons or complaint. It may be needed when communicating with the municipal court or reviewing court records.
Complainant or Issuing Officer
The summons may identify the police officer or other complainant who issued or signed the charge, along with the involved police agency.
Date, Time and Location
These fields identify when and where the alleged offense occurred. They can also help identify potentially relevant police reports, video or other evidence.
Court Date and Time
Your summons may contain an initial appearance date. A later notice from the court can change that date or the manner in which the appearance will occur.
Where to Appear
Review the court location and appearance instructions carefully. Some proceedings may be conducted in person while others may be scheduled remotely.

Ticket, Summons, or Warrant — What’s the Difference?
- Traffic ticket (uniform traffic ticket). Used for motor vehicle offenses. Some can be paid online; others say “court appearance required.”
- Complaint-summons. A criminal or disorderly persons charge where you were released and given a court date.
- Complaint-warrant. A more serious charge where you were arrested and held, at least initially. These usually involve indictable crimes and move to Superior Court.
Can I Just Pay My Ticket Online?
If your ticket does not say “court appearance required,” you can usually pay it through NJMCdirect.com. Paying a ticket is a guilty plea. It adds any points to your license and can trigger MVC surcharges and higher insurance premiums. Before paying, it’s worth asking whether the ticket can be amended to a no-point or lower-point offense.
How an Edison Municipal Court Case Works, Step by Step
- Charge and notice. You receive a ticket or complaint-summons with a court date, or a notice arrives by mail.
- First appearance. The judge explains the charges and your rights. You can enter a plea, apply for a public defender, or have your lawyer request more time.
- Discovery. Your lawyer requests the evidence: police reports, body-cam and dash-cam video, witness statements, and in DWI cases, Alcotest data and maintenance records.
- Conference with the municipal prosecutor. Most cases are resolved here through dismissal, amendment to a lesser charge, or diversion.
- Motions. If the stop, search, or arrest was unlawful, your lawyer can file a motion to suppress the evidence.
- Trial. If the case doesn’t resolve, the judge hears the evidence and decides guilt. There’s no jury in municipal court.
- Sentencing. If you’re convicted or plead guilty, the judge imposes fines, court costs, and any required penalties.
- Appeal. You have 20 days to appeal a municipal conviction to the Superior Court, Law Division.
Your First Court Date: What to Expect
- Arrive early. Plan on 20–30 minutes for parking and security screening.
- Dress appropriately. Business casual is fine. Avoid shorts, hats, and clothing with slogans.
- Silence your phone. Phone use is restricted in the courtroom.
- Check in. Follow the court staff’s instructions or the check-in process on your notice.
- Expect to wait. Cases with attorneys are often called first. Unrepresented cases may take most of the session.
- Ask for an interpreter if you need one. Interpreters are provided free of charge. Let the court know in advance if possible.
- Be careful what you say. Don’t discuss the facts of your case with the prosecutor, the police officer, or anyone else in the courtroom without a lawyer.
Virtual vs. In-Person Appearances
Some Edison Municipal Court matters may be scheduled virtually, while trials and many criminal matters are held in person. Your notice controls. Follow the appearance instructions on your summons or latest court notice. If you’re unsure, call the court or your attorney before your date.
Missed Court Dates, Fines, and Payment Plans
- Failure to appear. The judge can issue a bench warrant. For traffic matters, your license can be suspended. Act quickly; warrants can often be vacated and the case rescheduled.
- Can’t pay in full? Ask the court about a time payment order. Missing payments can lead to a license suspension or a warrant.
- Adjournments. Requests to reschedule should be made before your court date, not on the day.

Driving without insurance carries a one-year license suspension. DWI penalties depend on your BAC and prior record, and they include an ignition interlock requirement. See New Jersey DWI penalties.
A disorderly persons conviction is a criminal record. It can show up on background checks and affect jobs, professional licenses, housing, and immigration status.
Ways to Avoid a Conviction in Edison
- Dismissal. Weak evidence, missing discovery, or an unlawful stop can lead to dismissal.
- Downgrade or amendment. A charge can often be amended to a lesser offense or a local ordinance violation, with a smaller penalty and, in some cases, no criminal record.
- Conditional dismissal. A one-time program for eligible first offenders charged with disorderly persons offenses. If you complete it, the charge is dismissed.
- Conditional discharge. A similar program for certain first-time drug offenses.
- Pretrial Intervention (PTI). For eligible indictable charges transferred to Superior Court.
These programs have eligibility rules, and admission isn’t automatic. How your lawyer presents your application matters.
Public Defender or Private Lawyer?
If you face possible jail time or loss of your license and can’t afford a lawyer, you can apply for the Edison municipal public defender. The application fee is up to $200, which the court can waive. Public defenders handle heavy caseloads. A private lawyer can usually spend more time on discovery and motions, and can often appear for you on routine court dates so you miss less work.
After Your Case: Appeals and Expungement
- Appeals. You have 20 days from a conviction to appeal to the Superior Court, Law Division.
- Expungement. Dismissed charges can often be expunged right away. Most disorderly persons convictions can be expunged after a waiting period. See Middlesex County expungement. Traffic offenses and DWI are not criminal convictions and can’t be expunged.
