Parking & Arrival

Metuchen Borough Hall has designated parking for borough business, but spaces may be limited. Downtown alternatives include public parking on New Street and Center Street and the Pearl Street Garage.

When to arrive: Allow approximately 20–30 minutes before any required in-person appearance for parking, security and check-in. This is practical planning advice, not a court-mandated arrival time.

How to Plead Not Guilty in Metuchen

If your ticket is not marked “court appearance required” and you want to plead not guilty, you must contact the court office ahead of time to have your case scheduled. Call (732) 632-8540 before the date on your ticket. If you hire a lawyer, your attorney will enter an appearance and a not guilty plea for you and request discovery.

If your summons is marked “court appearance required,” you must appear on the listed date unless the court grants an adjournment.

Paying a Ticket Without Going to Court

Many payable traffic tickets can be paid online through NJMCDirect using court code 1210, or in person at the violations window before 3:45 p.m. Before you pay, understand what paying means: it is a guilty plea. Depending on the violation, that can mean motor vehicle points, MVC surcharges, higher insurance premiums, and in some cases a license suspension. Once the payment is processed, the plea generally can’t be undone. If the ticket carries points or you already have points on your record, speak with a lawyer first.

What Happens at Metuchen Municipal Court?

The borough calls cases in a set order, which means arriving first does not mean you’ll be heard first. According to the court, each session proceeds as follows:

  1. Applications for adjournments
  2. Arraignments and first appearances — the judge advises you of the charges and your rights, including the right to a lawyer and to apply for the public defender
  3. Guilty pleas
  4. Contested matters with attorneys
  5. Contested matters without attorneys
  6. All other contested matters

Cases where the defendant has a lawyer are called before contested cases where the defendant is representing themselves. If you plead not guilty and the case doesn’t resolve that day, it will usually be adjourned for a conference with the municipal prosecutor or for trial.

Courtroom Rules

  • No weapons of any kind
  • Shirts and shoes are required; hats are not permitted
  • Turn cell phones off or to vibrate
  • No food, drink, gum or smoking
  • Do not bring children if you can avoid it
  • When your name is called, approach the podium — not the judge’s bench

Do I Have to Appear in Person?

Not always. Metuchen offers a virtual hearing registration form for eligible matters, and some cases can be resolved through a plea by mail with the court’s approval. However, matters involving possible jail time, a driver’s license suspension, DWI, refusal, or a disorderly persons offense are generally handled in person unless the court directs otherwise. Your notice should tell you how to appear. If it doesn’t, call the court office.

What Charges Are Heard in Metuchen Municipal Court?

Metuchen Municipal Court handles motor vehicle and traffic violations, local ordinance violations, and disorderly persons and petty disorderly persons offenses that arise within the borough, including cases written by the Metuchen Police Department along Main Street, Middlesex Avenue (Route 27) and the downtown area near the train station.

  • Driving Without Insurance — N.J.S.A. 39:6B-2

What Happens to an Indictable Criminal Charge?

Municipal courts in New Jersey have limited jurisdiction. Metuchen Municipal Court does not try indictable offenses (what other states call felonies) such as aggravated assault, burglary, theft over $200, eluding, weapons offenses, or possession of CDS. These complaints may start in Metuchen, but they are forwarded to the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office for review and prosecuted in Middlesex County Superior Court at 56 Paterson Street, New Brunswick, NJ 08903. In some cases the prosecutor downgrades an indictable charge and sends it back to Metuchen Municipal Court to be handled as a disorderly persons offense.

What Penalties Can Metuchen Municipal Court Impose?

Type of Case Possible Consequences
Disorderly Persons Offense Up to 6 months in county jail, up to $1,000 fine, court assessments, probation, and a record that appears on background checks
Petty Disorderly Persons Offense Up to 30 days in jail, up to $500 fine, assessments and court-imposed conditions
DWI Ignition interlock, fines and surcharges, IDRC classes, license suspension for higher BAC levels and repeat offenses, and possible jail for repeat offenses
Traffic Violation Fines, MVC points, insurance increases, surcharges and possible license suspension

Do You Need a Lawyer for Metuchen Municipal Court?

Not every ticket needs a lawyer. But a municipal court conviction can follow you for years, and many people don’t realize what they gave up until after they’ve pleaded guilty. A lawyer can:

  • Review the summons or complaint for defects
  • Request discovery, including police reports, body camera and dash camera video, and breath test records
  • Identify legal and factual defenses
  • Negotiate with the municipal prosecutor for a dismissal, downgrade or reduced penalty
  • Explain exactly what a proposed plea will mean for your license, insurance and record

Having a lawyer matters most when the case involves:

  • Possible jail time
  • A driver’s license suspension
  • DWI or refusal charges
  • A disorderly persons offense that would create a record
  • Multiple related charges
  • A prior criminal or driving history
  • Immigration or professional licensing concerns

Can I Apply for a Public Defender?

Yes. If you are facing a charge that could result in jail, a license suspension or a significant fine, you can ask the court for a financial questionnaire (the form is also posted on the borough’s court page) to apply for representation by Metuchen’s municipal public defender. New Jersey law allows a municipality to charge an application fee of up to $200. The judge decides whether you qualify based on your income and circumstances.

Can I Reschedule My Metuchen Court Date?

You can request an adjournment, but it isn’t automatic. Adjournment requests are the first thing the court addresses at each session. Contact the court office at (732) 632-8540 or by fax at (732) 632-8112 as early as possible. Treat your original court date as still in effect until the court confirms a new date. A first request to give you time to hire a lawyer is usually granted.
