Parking & Arrival
Use the municipal-court visitor parking at the Perrineville Road court location and follow posted signs. Verify the entrance and any on-site restrictions before an in-person appearance.
When to arrive: Allow approximately 20–30 minutes before any required in-person appearance for parking, security and check-in. This is practical planning advice, not a court-mandated arrival time.
Driving directions use 1630 Perrineville Road. The court mailing address is 1 Municipal Plaza, Monroe Township, NJ 08831.

Monroe’s Rotating Court Schedule
Monroe alternates between virtual and in-person sessions depending on the week:
- 1st Tuesday, 9:00 a.m.: virtual
- 2nd Tuesday, 9:00 a.m.: in person
- 3rd Tuesday, 9:00 a.m.: virtual

If your date is in person, go to 1630 Perrineville Road, not the Municipal Plaza mailing address.
What Monroe’s Court Numbers Mean
From July 2025 through June 2026, the New Jersey Judiciary reported 11,327 filings in Monroe Township Municipal Court, down 2% from the year before. About 91% of them, 10,311, were moving violations. There were 641 criminal filings and 57 DWI filings, and the remaining few hundred were parking and other matters. Unlike many busy courts, Monroe’s total is driven by traffic, not parking tickets.
The court resolved 11,375 matters in the same period, a 100% clearance rate, meaning it kept pace with new filings. Even so, 1,409 cases were still pending at the end of the year, 572 of them counted as backlogged. These figures describe the court’s workload; they don’t predict how any one case will turn out.
Charges Heard in Monroe Township Municipal Court
Charges we regularly defend in Monroe include simple assault, disorderly conduct, harassment, shoplifting, drug paraphernalia, DWI, refusal to submit to a breath test, driving while suspended, reckless driving and drug possession.
Understanding Your Monroe Township Municipal Court Summons
A Monroe Township summons contains important information about the alleged offense including, the statute charged, the person or officer who issued the complaint, the location of court and when you are required to appear. The numbered areas below identify information worth carefully reviewing.
Key Information to Check
Court and Court Code
This identifies the municipality and court associated with the summons. For a case arising in Monroe Township, look carefully at the court information printed on your paperwork.
Summons or Complaint Number
This number identifies the individual summons or complaint. It may be needed when communicating with the municipal court or reviewing court records.
Complainant or Issuing Officer
The summons may identify the police officer or other complainant who issued or signed the charge, along with the involved police agency.
Date, Time and Location
These fields identify when and where the alleged offense occurred. They can also help identify potentially relevant police reports, video or other evidence.
Court Date and Time
Your summons may contain an initial appearance date. A later notice from the court can change that date or the manner in which the appearance will occur.
Where to Appear
Review the court location and appearance instructions carefully. Some proceedings may be conducted in person while others may be scheduled remotely.
Municipality / Court Code: 1213
1 Municipal Plaza, Monroe Township, NJ 08831
The date on your original summons isn’t always final. If the court later sends a notice changing the date, time, or format, the latest notice controls.
What Happens After You Receive a Summons
- Payable traffic tickets. If your ticket doesn’t say “court appearance required,” you can usually pay it online at NJMCdirect.com. Paying is a guilty plea, so any points, MVC surcharges, and insurance increases still apply. Before paying, ask whether the ticket could be amended to a lower-point or no-point offense.
- Appearance required. Criminal and disorderly persons charges, DWI, and more serious traffic offenses require a court appearance.
- Virtual or in person. Monroe holds most sessions on Tuesday mornings, with a mix of virtual and in-person dates, plus some afternoon sessions. The court information above lists the current schedule. Your notice tells you which format applies to your case.
Pleading Not Guilty in Monroe Township Municipal Court
To plead not guilty, call the court and have your ticket or complaint number ready. The court will give you a date and appearance instructions.
After a not-guilty plea, your lawyer requests discovery, the State’s evidence against you. Depending on the charge, that can include police reports, body-worn and dash-cam video, witness statements, photographs, and lab results. Your lawyer then meets with the municipal prosecutor to try to resolve the case. Any plea agreement must be approved by the judge.
Criminal Complaints Filed by Private Citizens
Not every Monroe case starts with an arrest or traffic stop. A private citizen, such as a neighbor, family member, or acquaintance, can file a criminal complaint, often for harassment, simple assault, or criminal mischief.
For less serious private complaints, the court may refer the case to Monroe’s Community Dispute Resolution program. A session includes two trained mediators, the complainant, and the defendant. If the two sides reach an agreement, the complaint is dismissed. If mediation fails, the case returns to municipal court. Having a lawyer prepare you for mediation, or handle the case if it goes back to court, can make a real difference.
DWI Cases in Monroe Township
Monroe recorded 57 DWI filings last court year. DWI and refusal charges are decided by the municipal judge, without a jury, and your notice will say whether a given date is virtual or in person. For defenses, penalties and Monroe’s DWI numbers, see our Monroe Township DWI lawyer page.
Drug Possession Charges in Monroe Township
Possession of cocaine, heroin, pills, and most other controlled dangerous substances under N.J.S.A. 2C:35-10 is a third-degree crime. Those cases go to Superior Court in New Brunswick. Paraphernalia and some lower-level drug charges stay in Monroe Township Municipal Court. Your complaint lists the statute and the degree of the charge.
First-time offenders may qualify for conditional discharge in municipal court or Pretrial Intervention (PTI) in Superior Court. See our Monroe drug possession page for more.
When a Monroe Charge Goes to New Brunswick
Indictable charges, such as most drug possession, aggravated assault, burglary and theft over $200, begin with a complaint in Monroe but are prosecuted by the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office in Superior Court in New Brunswick. Some are downgraded and returned to Monroe. See our Middlesex County criminal defense page for penalty ranges and for programs, such as conditional dismissal and PTI, that can keep a conviction off your record.
Out-of-State Drivers and Plea by Mail
Out-of-state drivers with Monroe traffic tickets may be able to plead by mail instead of returning to New Jersey. Call the court first to confirm that your ticket qualifies and to have the form sent to you. Approval depends on the charge and the court.
