Guttenberg Court Filings, Case Resolutions and Overall Caseload Source: New Jersey Judiciary, Municipal Court Statistics, July 2025–June 2026, PDF page 252. Figures are reported by court, not necessarily by the arresting police agency or a defendant's town of residence. Total filings include parking tickets. Criminal filings use the report’s Criminal Total column. A clearance rate above 100% means more cases were resolved than newly filed during the period; it is not a conviction rate. What Guttenberg’s Court Numbers Mean
Guttenberg is one of the most densely populated towns in the country, and its court numbers reflect that. From July 2025 through June 2026, the New Jersey Judiciary reported 20,821 filings in Guttenberg Municipal Court, down about 18% from 25,336 the year before. Of those, 16,958 were parking filings, about 81% of the total. The rest were 2,659 moving violations, 1,140 criminal filings, and 64 DWI filings.
The trends point in different directions. Total filings fell about 18%, but criminal filings rose about 16% (from 981 to 1,140), and DWI filings dropped from 85 to 64. The criminal total includes indictable complaints that start in Guttenberg but are sent to Superior Court. These figures measure the court’s workload. They aren’t the number of residents arrested or convicted.
The 162% clearance rate means the court resolved far more matters than were newly filed, including cases carried over from earlier periods. It’s not a conviction or dismissal rate, and it doesn’t predict how quickly any one case will finish.
Criminal Complaints Heard in Guttenberg Municipal Court
The statute, subsection, and grading of the charge determine which court hears it and what penalties apply. A general label like “assault” doesn’t tell you the full legal charge. Common charges heard in Guttenberg include:
- Simple Assault — N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1(a)
- Harassment — N.J.S.A. 2C:33-4
- Disorderly Conduct — N.J.S.A. 2C:33-2
- Shoplifting (under $200) — N.J.S.A. 2C:20-11
- Criminal Mischief — N.J.S.A. 2C:17-3
- Resisting Arrest — N.J.S.A. 2C:29-2
- Drug Paraphernalia — N.J.S.A. 2C:36-2
Most drug possession charges (N.J.S.A. 2C:35-10), along with aggravated assault, burglary, and theft over $200, are indictable. They’re prosecuted by the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Hudson County Superior Court.
Read each complaint separately, even when several charges come from one incident. Related charges can carry different consequences, and one incident can produce cases in more than one court.
Local ordinance charges should be reviewed on their own terms too. A reduction to an ordinance violation can avoid a criminal conviction, but it doesn’t automatically erase the record of the original arrest or complaint. Keep the final disposition of every charge.
Guttenberg Traffic Tickets and DWI Charges
A payable ticket and a summons requiring an appearance call for different responses:
- Payable tickets. Guttenberg accepts payment in person (cash, check, money order, Visa, or MasterCard), by mail (check or money order payable to Guttenberg Municipal Court), or online at NJMCdirect.com. Paying is a guilty plea, so any points, MVC surcharges, and insurance increases still apply.
- Appearance required. DWI, refusal, and tickets marked “court appearance required” go before the judge. An online payment option for one ticket doesn’t mean every charge from the same stop can be paid.
- Want to contest it? Check the instructions for contesting the charge before you pay, and ask the court if anything is unclear.
Common traffic charges in Guttenberg include:
- Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) — N.J.S.A. 39:4-50
- Refusal to Submit to a Breath Test — N.J.S.A. 39:4-50.4a
- Driving While Suspended — N.J.S.A. 39:3-40
- Driving Without Insurance — N.J.S.A. 39:6B-2
- Reckless Driving — N.J.S.A. 39:4-96

Keep your original summons together with every later notice. If you have more than one case pending, write down each case number and court date so an update about one isn’t mistaken for an update about all of them. Make sure the court has your current address, phone, and email.
Preparing for Your Court Date
- Confirm whether your appearance is in person or virtual. Follow your current notice, not an older announcement about remote court. If the format is unclear, call the court before your date.
- In person: Plan your route to 6808 Park Avenue and allow time to find the entrance and courtroom. The court information above covers parking.
- Virtual: Test your device and connection beforehand, and keep the connection instructions handy.
- Need an interpreter? Tell the court before your appearance.
- Need a different date? Contact the court promptly, and get confirmation of the change before relying on it.
- Don’t discuss the facts of your case with the prosecutor or officer without a lawyer.
What’s at Stake

- Downgrade or amendment to a lesser offense or a town ordinance violation.
- Conditional dismissal for eligible first offenders charged with disorderly persons offenses.
- Conditional discharge for certain first-time drug offenses.
- Pretrial Intervention (PTI) for eligible indictable charges in Superior Court.

Guttenberg Municipal Court FAQs
Is a Guttenberg parking ticket a criminal charge? No. Parking tickets are not criminal charges and don’t create a criminal record. They make up about 81% of Guttenberg Municipal Court’s filings. Unpaid parking tickets can still lead to a license or registration suspension, so don’t ignore them.
What is the Guttenberg Municipal Court code? Guttenberg’s New Jersey Judiciary municipal court code is 0903. You’ll see it on court notices and may need it when paying a ticket or looking up a case online.
If my charge is reduced to a local ordinance violation, is my record clear? Not necessarily. An ordinance violation isn’t a criminal conviction, but the record of the original arrest or complaint can remain. Keep the final disposition for each charge. You may later need it to check whether the arrest record can be expunged. See our Hudson County expungement guide.
What happens if I miss my Guttenberg court date? The judge can issue a bench warrant for your arrest, and for traffic matters your license can be suspended. Call the court or a lawyer right away. The warrant can often be cleared and the case rescheduled.
Can a lawyer go to Guttenberg Municipal Court for me? For many traffic and minor matters, a lawyer can appear for you or handle the case without you being there. For DWI and most criminal charges, you’ll usually need to be present for the plea or trial, but your lawyer handles the negotiating and speaks for you.
