Parking & Arrival

Municipal Court is at 1 Old Bridge Plaza. The municipal complex has a large parking area. Allow extra time to park, enter the complex and locate the courtroom, and confirm whether your session is remote or in person before traveling.

When to arrive: Allow approximately 20–30 minutes before any required in-person appearance for parking, security and check-in. This is practical planning advice, not a court-mandated arrival time.

Court direct line: 732-588-1994. The Township notes that callers may experience delays during Tuesday court sessions; when possible, the better time to call is between 1:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Criminal and Traffic Cases Heard in Old Bridge Municipal Court

A defendant must appear when the offense is not payable or when the summons indicates:

“Court Appearance Required.”

The appearance date and time printed on the summons, or any later notice issued by the court, control. Certain serious motor vehicle offenses ordinarily require a court appearance, including charges such as:

  • DWI — N.J.S.A. 39:4-50
  • Refusal — N.J.S.A. 39:4-50.4a
  • Reckless Driving — N.J.S.A. 39:4-96
  • Careless Driving — N.J.S.A. 39:4-97
  • Driving While Suspended — N.J.S.A. 39:3-40

  • Possession of CDS — N.J.S.A. 2C:35-10
  • Drug Paraphernalia — N.J.S.A. 2C:36-2

More serious indictable charges may begin with a complaint arising in Old Bridge but are generally transferred to the Middlesex County Superior Court system for further proceedings.

A summons or complaint should identify the offense charged and the court in which the matter is scheduled. The specific court notice controls the appearance date, time and whether the proceeding is scheduled in person or remotely.

What Happens After You Receive a Summons in Old Bridge?

The procedure depends on the type of charge, but a municipal court case commonly begins with a summons or complaint directing the defendant to Old Bridge Municipal Court.

At an early court appearance, the defendant is advised of the charge and the matter may be scheduled for further proceedings. In represented cases, defense counsel can request and review discovery, which may include police reports, body-camera or dash-camera footage, witness statements, photographs, laboratory materials and other evidence relevant to the charge.

The defense and municipal prosecutor may discuss whether the case can be resolved without trial where permitted by law. If the matter cannot be resolved, motions or a trial may follow. At trial, the State bears the burden of proving the charge beyond a reasonable doubt.

The exact procedure can vary significantly depending on whether the case involves a criminal complaint, motor vehicle violation or DWI charge.

Using the Old Bridge Municipal Court

Old Bridge Municipal Court handles a wide range of traffic, DWI, disorderly persons and municipal ordinance matters. Whether a defendant must appear in court depends on the charge, the summons and any later notice issued by the court.

Civilian Complaints

Civilian complaints may be signed at Old Bridge Municipal Court on:

Monday, Thursday and Friday
10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

A civilian complaint is different from a summons issued directly by a police officer. Anyone seeking to file a civilian complaint should contact the court in advance to confirm current filing procedures and any required documentation.

Paying a Summons or Entering a Guilty Plea

Some traffic and municipal offenses can be resolved without appearing before a judge.

If the box marked “Court Appearance Required” is not checked and the offense is payable, a defendant may be able to enter a guilty plea and pay the prescribed penalty without appearing in court.

Payment information can be checked through NJMCdirect, New Jersey’s online municipal court payment system:

NJMCdirect:
https://www.njmcdirect.com/

Defendants may also contact Old Bridge Municipal Court at 732-721-5600 for information about whether a particular summons is payable.

Payment of a summons generally constitutes a guilty plea to the offense. Before paying a significant traffic charge, defendants should understand the potential motor vehicle points, insurance consequences, surcharges or other penalties associated with the violation.

Pleading Not Guilty in Old Bridge Municipal Court

A defendant who wishes to contest a summons should notify Old Bridge Municipal Court at least 7 days before the court date listed on the summons.

Advance notice allows the court to schedule the matter appropriately and may help avoid an unnecessary additional appearance.

A not-guilty plea does not mean that the defendant is required to testify or prove innocence. The State bears the burden of proving the charged offense beyond a reasonable doubt.

Depending on the charge, the defense may request discovery such as police reports, body-worn camera footage, dash-camera recordings, witness statements, laboratory reports or other evidence relevant to the case.

Missing Court or Failing to Pay a Summons

Ignoring a municipal court summons can create additional problems.

Failure to appear when required or failure to pay a prescribed penalty may result in additional penalties. Depending on the type of matter and court action taken, consequences may include a warrant or suspension-related consequences.

Defendants should not assume that a missed appearance or unpaid summons will simply disappear. Anyone who has missed an Old Bridge Municipal Court date should contact the court or an attorney promptly to determine the current status of the case.

If an attorney represents the defendant, counsel may address scheduling issues with the court in accordance with the court’s procedures.
