Parking & Arrival
The court is at 540 Ridge Road in the municipal complex. Follow posted visitor-parking and courthouse entrance signs and allow extra time for check-in.
When to arrive: Allow approximately 20–30 minutes before any required in-person appearance for parking, security and check-in. This is practical planning advice, not a court-mandated arrival time.

What to Expect at South Brunswick Municipal Court
To enter the court building, go up the ramp. Inside the doors, the violations window is directly on your left. You check in there, and it is also where you pay at the end of the court session.
After checking in, turn right and pass through security: a police officer, a metal detector and a table to screen belongings. The courtroom entrance is directly past security, where you can walk in and sit down. Restrooms are outside in the hallway.
The prosecutor’s office is directly to the left of the security station. Attorneys usually wait in the small area between security and the courtroom entrance to meet with the prosecutor, so a represented defendant can sit in the courtroom while the lawyer works on the case.

Understanding Your South Brunswick Municipal Court Summons
A South Brunswick summons contains important information about the alleged offense including, the statute charged, the person or officer who issued the complaint, the location of court and when you are required to appear. The numbered areas below identify information worth carefully reviewing.
Key Information to Check
Court and Court Code
This identifies the municipality and court associated with the summons. For a case arising in South Brunswick, look carefully at the court information printed on your paperwork.
Summons or Complaint Number
This number identifies the individual summons or complaint. It may be needed when communicating with the municipal court or reviewing court records.
Complainant or Issuing Officer
The summons may identify the police officer or other complainant who issued or signed the charge, along with the involved police agency.
Date, Time and Location
These fields identify when and where the alleged offense occurred. They can also help identify potentially relevant police reports, video or other evidence.
Court Date and Time
Your summons may contain an initial appearance date. A later notice from the court can change that date or the manner in which the appearance will occur.
Where to Appear
Review the court location and appearance instructions carefully. Some proceedings may be conducted in person while others may be scheduled remotely.
Municipality / Court Code: 1221

The date on your original summons isn’t always final. If the court later sends a notice changing the date, time, or format, the latest notice controls.
Zoom and In-Person Court Sessions
South Brunswick holds both Zoom and in-person sessions:
- First appearances are generally held by Zoom. That’s when the judge explains the charge and your rights, and you can apply for a public defender or ask for time to hire a lawyer.
- Matters with “consequences of magnitude” require an in-person session after the first appearance. That includes cases where you could face jail, a license suspension, or a significant fine, like DWI and most disorderly persons charges.
Don’t assume every court date will be the same format. Follow the date, time, and format on your latest notice. The township’s court page has its virtual court instructions, adjournment policy, and session calendar.
What Happens After You’re Charged
- First appearance (usually by Zoom). You can enter a plea, apply for a public defender, or have your lawyer request more time.
- Discovery. The State’s evidence can include police reports, body-worn and patrol-car video, witness statements, photographs, lab reports, Alcotest records, and medical records. In South Brunswick, discovery requests don’t go to the court; the township lists separate recipients. Your lawyer handles this for you.
- Conference with the municipal prosecutor. Most cases are resolved here through dismissal, a downgrade, or diversion. Any plea agreement must be approved by the judge.
- Motions and trial. If the stop or search was unlawful, your lawyer can file a motion to suppress. If the case doesn’t resolve, the judge decides it at trial.
- Appeal. You have 20 days to appeal a municipal conviction to the Superior Court, Law Division. The township’s court forms page includes appeal materials.
Drug Charges in South Brunswick
Possession of cocaine, heroin, pills, and most other drugs under N.J.S.A. 2C:35-10 is a third-degree crime, so those cases go to Superior Court in New Brunswick. Distribution charges are more serious indictable offenses. Paraphernalia and some lower-level drug charges stay in South Brunswick Municipal Court.
First-time offenders may qualify for conditional discharge or Pretrial Intervention (PTI). For more, see:

DWI Cases in South Brunswick
South Brunswick DWI cases are charged under N.J.S.A. 39:4-50, often with a refusal charge under N.J.S.A. 39:4-50.4a. DWI is a motor vehicle offense, not a crime, and it’s heard in the municipal court where the stop happened. Common defense issues include:
- whether the officer had a lawful reason to stop you
- the officer’s observations and standardized field sobriety tests
- body-worn and patrol-car video
- Alcotest procedures, calibration, and maintenance records
- blood or urine test evidence in drug DWI cases
- whether the State can prove you were operating the vehicle
Penalties depend on your BAC and prior record. They can include fines, an ignition interlock requirement, and license suspension. See our South Brunswick DWI lawyer page for more.
Paying a Traffic Ticket
South Brunswick tickets can be paid:
- online at NJMCdirect.com, using court code 1221, your plate number, and your ticket or complaint number;
- by mail; or
- in person at the Violations Bureau during business hours.
Paying is a guilty plea, so any points, MVC surcharges, and insurance increases still apply. Some offenses can’t be paid and require a court appearance. Before paying, ask whether the ticket could be amended to a lower-point or no-point offense.
When a South Brunswick Charge Is Indictable
Most drug possession, aggravated assault, burglary and theft over $200 charges are indictable. They begin with a South Brunswick complaint and then go to Middlesex County Superior Court in New Brunswick, where the county prosecutor’s office handles them; a downgraded charge can come back to the township. Our Middlesex County criminal defense page explains penalty ranges and programs such as conditional dismissal and PTI.
Court Forms
The South Brunswick court forms page has records-request forms, municipal court appeal materials, and the financial questionnaire for a public defender. Completed public defender questionnaires go to the court by email.
