Middlesex County Adult Correction Center in North Brunswick: Release, Bail and Visits

Reviewed by William A. Proetta, Esq. · Updated

Adults held on Middlesex County charges are taken to the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center on Apple Orchard Lane in North Brunswick, the county’s jail. To find out whether someone is there and what they are charged with, call the jail’s Records line at 732-951-3355; the main number is 732-297-3636.

Most people arrested in Edison, Woodbridge, New Brunswick or Piscataway on a complaint-warrant pass through this facility while a judge decides whether to release them. Under New Jersey’s bail reform law, that decision usually turns on release conditions rather than money, and it must be made quickly. We represent people held here from our Edison office, and in more than 15 years of criminal trial practice the families I speak with ask the same things first: where is my son, daughter or spouse, when will they come home, and what can we do tonight.

About the Facility

The jail is run by the Middlesex County Office of Adult Corrections & Youth Services, which also operates the Juvenile Detention Center and a Youth Shelter Program at the same complex. The Adult Correction Center opened in 1984 and uses a “Direct Supervision” model, with uniformed officers wearing body-worn cameras. Its health program is listed by the county as accredited by the National Commission on Correctional Health Care.

Finding Someone After an Arrest

The county runs an Inmate Lookup site, linked from the Adult Corrections pages, that lets the public search for someone currently housed at the Adult Correction Center under the New Jersey Open Public Records Act (OPRA); users must agree not to use the information to intimidate, harass or threaten anyone. To confirm the charges and any amount due, call Records at 732-951-3355 with the person’s full legal name and date of birth ready.

If Records has no listing, the person may still be at a municipal police station, may have been released on a complaint-summons, or may be held in another county. A defense lawyer can often learn the status and the next court event faster through the court system.

How Release Works Now

New Jersey’s Criminal Justice Reform Act changed what happens after an arrest. Most people are not asked for cash at all.

  1. Complaint-warrant. The person is held so Pretrial Services can prepare a risk assessment.
  2. Release decision within 48 hours. Under N.J.S.A. 2A:162-16, a judge must decide on release no later than 48 hours after the person is committed to the jail, unless the prosecutor files a detention motion.
  3. Release on conditions. Most defendants are released on their own recognizance or under a Pretrial Monitoring level, with conditions such as reporting, no contact with alleged victims, or home detention.
  4. Detention motion. If the prosecutor moves to detain, the person stays at the jail until a detention hearing, where the State must prove its case for detention by clear and convincing evidence in most cases. Our page on first appearances and detention hearings explains that hearing, and our statewide pretrial release and detention guide gives the full legal framework.

In Middlesex, first appearances (CJP) are held by video every day, Monday through Saturday, at 2:30 p.m., with the detainee appearing from the jail.

Posting Bail When Bail Is Set

The county’s Posting Bail page still describes cash and property bail for the cases where a judge sets a monetary amount. Charges from other jurisdictions can change the total, so before going to the jail call Records (732-951-3355) to confirm every charge and the full amount of bails and fees.

Phone Calls, Tablets and Money

The county lists three vendors for families. Inmate phone service is provided under a contract with Global Tel*Link. Tablet accounts are funded through gettingout.com. Deposits to an inmate account and “secure Pak” orders go through accesscatalog.com. Fees and limits are set by those vendors; check each site.

Keep phone and tablet conversations away from the facts of the case. Anything the person says to family or friends can end up as evidence, while conversations with a defense lawyer are protected.

Visiting

Personal visits at the Adult Correction Center are video visits only. Visitors come to the facility’s visiting lobby and are served first come, first served during posted sessions; the screen shuts off after 20 minutes, and visits may be monitored or recorded.

Medical and Mental Health Concerns

If your family member has a medical condition, needs medication, or has a history of suicidal thoughts or attempts, the county asks families to call immediately. Medical staff can be reached at 732-297-3636 ext. 6101 or 6104. Tell the defense lawyer too; health information can matter at the release hearing and later in the case.

When the Person Is Under 18

A young person detained on a juvenile complaint goes to a separate facility: the Middlesex County Juvenile Detention Center, also on Apple Orchard Lane in North Brunswick (732-297-8991), which provides short-term secure custody for juveniles remanded by the Family Court. Juvenile cases run through the Family Part at 120 New Street in New Brunswick; see our page on the Middlesex County Juvenile Detention Center, and our Middlesex juvenile defense page for the court process.

What Families Can Do Tonight

  • Call Records at 732-951-3355 to confirm where the person is and what the charges are.
  • Write down any court date, complaint number or charge you are given.
  • Collect proof of employment, school, residence and caregiving duties; those details support release.
  • Share medical or mental-health needs with the jail’s medical staff and the lawyer.
  • Do not contact the alleged victim or witnesses on the person’s behalf. A judge can order no contact with victims and witnesses at every release level, including release on recognizance.
  • Call a defense lawyer before the first appearance, not after.

What We Do for Someone Held in North Brunswick

Our first goal is getting the person home under conditions they can live with. Before the first appearance, we gather the information a judge will weigh, including work, family, treatment and residence, and we present it at the hearing. When the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office moves to detain, we contest the motion, cross-examine where appropriate, and propose a monitoring plan as an alternative. If a client is released under conditions that are too strict, we seek to modify them. For someone whose arrest stems from addiction, we also look early at whether Recovery Court is a realistic route. The case itself moves to the Middlesex County Superior Court, and residents of the city can read about our New Brunswick criminal defense work.
