Routine Traffic Stop Leads to Huge Heroin Bust in Cranbury, NJ

Middlesex County Drug Bust Yields 23 Bricks and One Bundle of Heroin

According to mycentraljersey.com, a routine traffic stop on the New Jersey Turnpike lead to the arrest of three individuals on charges of Heroin Possession in Cranbury Township. At about 1:40 a.m. on Saturday September 7, State Trooper Robert Kilmurray stopped a silver Dodge Avenger for Speeding. The trooper discovered during the stop that one of the occupants of the vehicle had an outstanding warrant out of Mercer County.

Further investigation led the trooper to the discovery of 23 bricks and one bundle of heroin valued at approximately $11,500. To better understand the quantity involved, a bundle of heroin is equivalent to ten bags. A bag of heroin is a small, fingernail-sized packet of the drug that is usually sold for $10-$25. A brick of heroin contains five bundles, or fifty bags.

During the investigation, one suspect fled on foot and was later apprehended and subsequently charged with resisting arrest, while another suspect faces the additional charge of unlawful weapon possession for a can of pepper spray. Due to the sheer amount of the drug found in their possession, all three suspects most likely face charges for first degree heroin possession and distribution which occurs when a defendant has more than five ounces of heroin in his or her possession with intent to distribute. This crime can be punishable by up to ten to twenty years in state prison and includes a presumption of incarceration.
